The A-10 Thunderbolt II is the undisputed Arnold Schwarzenegger of the skies. The "hog" may not be fast or pretty, but is tougher than any aircraft ever built and gets the job done and brings the pilot home.

It carries over 15,000 pounds of ordinance, has one of the most lethal guns ever mounted on an airplane, can loiter for hours over the battlefield and has exceptional manueverability down low and slow. It can also survive multiple hits from flack, AA fire, SAM's and A2A missiles. It's designed to fly with two complete hydraulic system failures, one tail, one elevator, one engine and part of a wing blown off and can even land with the landing gear up. Try that with a fighter...

Aircraft are so mission specific, and I've been a pilot for so long, your question is difficult. The most fun to fly was the F-104. The F-111A was an awesome fighter/bomber. The Cessna 441 Conquest II is great in the civilian turboprop category. The Cessna 421 is a super family airplane. The Gulfstream IV SP is a tremendous business jet, and though I've never personally flown it, I suspect the G-V is even better. That transcontinental capability is something to think about.

My favourite fighter is the Supermarine Spitfire. My favourite bomber is the B-29 Superfortress, both from WWII.

In modern times, fighter- F-16 Falcon, bomber- B-52 Stratofortress.

Practicallity (If I had to run an air force), A couple of F-22 Raptors (expensive but stealthy and great fighter) expensive, and a lot of Eurofighter Typhoons (they're cheap and great fighters, but not stealthy), and for bombers, the B-52. I don't know what the
AC-130 gunship classifies as, but I would want that.

My personal best aircraft is the Sikorsky Blackhawk helicopter, which I was crewchief on for 5 years. However, my brother in law and I built a Van's Aircraft RV 9A kitplane recently. It is a 2 seater, 4 cylinder that has an average climb rate of 2000fpm-which is pretty good. We enjoy the bird alot, it has great range (about 800 miles), and only ran about 60,000 to build, nicely equipped.

The best plane is always the one you are flying. In the military I flew OH 58D Helicopters and I didn't think of anything else. I knew those birds from top to bottom, front to back and rotor tip to rotor tip. Then I transitioned to UH60's and my whole world opened up. Now that I am a civilian and have to rent planes to fly, I look back at every military aircraft I was ever a part of with great admiration.

When answering to a "best" question, we would need a singularity. Its so difficult as aircrafts are made for different purposes and each role has its own bests.

For me, it would be SR-71 Blackbird, for its trisonic capability barely two decades after the first supersonic flight, its still standing records for speed and altitude, its enviable mission records and above all its defying flights through the valley of death.

Epitomized with the message "Though I Fly Through the Valley of Death, I Shall Fear No Evil. For I am at 80,000 Feet and Climbing.", it is one of the greatest triumphs of aeronautics.

Here I am getting ready to go. A cop had just dropped by to make sure I wasn't going to start it up again. "OH NO, I learned my lesson the last time, plus the fuel bill would kill me". I'm just waiting for him to turn the corner and leave, then I'm kicking 'em and lighting 'em.. He doesn't know I still have the USAF lettering on top, so I can sneak fuel off of KC135's out over Lake Michigan.
