The human heart is fully developed before the first year after birth. Some changes take place after birth and during the first postnatal months. The ductus arteriosus closes, the oval foramen closes, the umbilical vein and ductus venosus close, and the umbilical arteries close. These changes if progressed properly constitutes a fully functional heart. Even if the oval foramen does not close completely the heart is still fully functional in some cases.
