I had a car accident in NSW over the weekend and hit two other cars. I am at fault but I had no third party insurance, only Compulsory... so I am waiting for the bills... The two car owners i hit are letting their insurance companies deal with it. Does anyone know what happens next, do they send a bill in the mail? do they call us? I didnt have the opportunity to do anything at the time, we went straight in the ambulancec and the police and others took care of the rest.

It differs by Country, State and such. The best answer you could get was someone locally. I can only quote you the laws here in the USSA

What do you mean when you said you have 'compulsory' insurance? Do you mean comprehensive or compulsory? If it is the former, then your policy will cover you for any damages/loss to your vehicle as well as to third party. In my country here, the most minimal insurance is Third Party insurance which covers damages/loss caused by insured vehicle to any third party (this include bodily injury). Now that all parties have lodged police report, the next step is to inform your insurance company of the said accident as you have a responsibility to notify your insurance company of any impending claims or any accident that could bring about a claim. The third parties would definitely write to your insurance company if they know the procedures but if they don't, then don't be afraid if you receive any litigation letters. Just send them over to your insurance company and they will act for you. Good luck.

if you are fully comprehensive it will cover the repare bill's and injuries ,as well as the damage done to your's. if the other people have your datails, then insurance companys will deal with it
if on the other hand , you only had third party fire and theft you will be responsible for the bill's for the other people's damaged car's as third party fire theft only cover's your car if it catches fire gets stolen or a third party gest hurt in an accident.

Your local people may have a better answer. In general if you have minimal insurance and there are people who will sue to get recovery from damages the worst case scenario is that they will go to court and ask a judge to place a judgment against you. That means if you ever have any money ever they get their money from you. They will, of course, try at first to bully you into borrowing the money from banks or relatives or threaten to garnish your wages.
Sorry for your trouble, be careful out there.
