Is there any such thing as actual laser? or is it the same thing as intense light pulse? What's safer and more effective for removing/reducing facial hair? Every time I go somewhere where they claim to do laser, it turns out to be intense light pulse, so I'm beggining to wonder if they're just the same thing, but the beauticians don't seem to know if that is the case.

A laser is a generated as a specific wavelength using crystals. An IPL produces every wavelength and then uses a filter to only deliver the wavelength that you are looking for. Generally, an IPL can be used for more "modalities" or types of procedures because you can just change the filter and you have a new wavelength. My experience is that a laser is better for hair removal and is more "idiot" proof. An IPL can be effective but it means the operator has to be better trained. The attached site has additional explanations related to the various technologies.

Laser and light beam technology are used interchangeably in the laser hair removal industry. They all basically do the same thing, i.e send a confined beam of light down the shaft of the hair in an effort to kill off the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal works best on fair skinned people with dark hair as the laser has to be able to distinguish between the hair and the skin.

The laser feels like a little pin prick as it target each hair and skin redness is normal for a couple of hours after each session.

Several sessions are usually required to treat any specific area, but this is dependent on the strength of the hair growth.

Some people do experience hair regrowth after to 12-18 months. You should check with your salon/clinic as to their policy regarding this.

There are also home laser hair removal kits available. The Rio uses a safe 808nm diverging diode laser and has been clinically tested. Its manufactured in the U.K by a reputable company.

DIY laser hair removal kits do take longer as the laser isn't as strong as a salon laser, but they do definitely work. Furthermore, you can save yourself a fortune.

electrolysis is where a metal probe is slid through the hair follicle and electricity is delivered through the probe. it's the most permanent type of hair removal - but it's costly and tedious, so larger areas may not be as fun to get done! it can only be performed by an electrolysist. a girlfriend says she gets this done and loves it. i think this method is more appropriate for eyebrows / mustaches.

laser uses light at a specified wavelength delivered from a handpiece into the skin, where it targets dark material (usually the pigment in hair), causing thermal and/or mechanical damage to the follicle. long term studies haven't determined the actual safety of this type of hair removal. it's good for larger areas of hair removal. it's not a good idea for someone who tans or who has darker skin to recieve this method.

intense light is similar to laser. it's good for larger areas of hair. those with lighter skin and darker hair are better suited for this method.

hope this helps!
