I'm 25 years old, and have used sunbeds occasionally since about the age of 21, never usually more than 10 or so 6 minute sessions, maybe twice a year.
This year however, i've been fed up with being so pale that people think i'm ill, and been going on them more, perhaps 15 or so 3 minute sessions in the last 3 months. I know the dangers associated, but fake tans just don't seem to work for me - i have such a naturally low level of melanin in my skin, they don't seem to have any effect on me, and i am just left with a vaguely orange tint.
I'm developing some lines around my eyes, which makes me think i'm just going to have to put up with being pale rather than go wrinkly. However, i'm concerned that the sunbed use i have carried out so far might have made these permanent.
Will these fade with time, or am i now stuck with them? And can anyone recommend a fake tan that really stands out from the crowd for working well and providing a good colour?
Thanks for any help

In answer to your question-yes, even limited amounts of tanning in beds can cause permanent damage to your skin. If you've developed wrinkles around you're eyes, they will no go away with time (side note; how is your vision? If you squint a lot, that could have contributed to your wrinkles, also). I used to tan a lot when I was younger (I'm 26 now) and now I regret every second of it. I love the way it looked, but I hate to think that I might look like a leather suitcase when I'm 50. Make sure you use tons of lotion daily on your face and body; it won't undo the damage, but well hydrated skin is usually plumper than dry skin which makes wrinkles not appear as deep. As for the self tanner, I use neutrogena on my face and body, and I really like the way it looks. Good for you for recognizing that tanning is potentially ruining your skin-you're one step ahead of a lot of people!

My skin is permanently damaged from occasionally using the suntan beds YEARS ago... I have had cancers removed and am covered with freckles and moles that did not exist prior. I will always be nervous about finding more cancer on my body. If I could turn back the clock, I would NEVER go to the tanning beds, I would be glad to be pale, at least I'd be healthy and my skin would stay younger looking years later. It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life, and now, with a hugely increased cancer risk, I am happy to tell others, don't believe what the tanning salons tell you, the truth is out there that you WILL be very much more at risk for cancer, wrinkles, freckles, moles by using these beds. ANY exposure to these rays, whether through sun or the beds is not good. There is no such thing as "safe" exposure unless you are covered in sunscreen!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunbeds cause more damage and skin cancers than the sun. Buy some fake tan. Dove Summer Glow Body Lotion and Nivea Sunkissed Skin gradually build a tan. No streaking either. Be safe rather than sorry.

You are quite young and things should settle down without any problems. Whenever I am asked by patients if it is OK to sunbathe or use UV lamps, I must admit I tell them medically that they should stay pale and interesting,
UV increases the incidence of skin cancers, which are on the increase, it also increases the ageing of the skin.
If you are desperate for a tan there are now loads of gentle chemical tans which have neither risk.

the fact that you are asking this question shows that you are trully concerned-get off them, your skin is the biggest organ in your the body-you must take care of it!i have suffered 30 years of psoriasis and its not nice walking around having people staring at you-and that might well happen if you continue, not the psoriasis but the skin wrinkling or turning orange or cancer, there are goverment health warnings on this issue-and that for a good reason!!-just read your answers, they say it all-good luck..and go pale!!!its in at the momment.

Having fake tan done professionally is a good idea.... i have a spray tan once every 2 weeks... my best friend is a beautician and she uses sudo.... it looks really realistic... it costs about £15 for full body and face... and if you only have it once every 2 weeks then it wont work out as too expensive..... spray tan usually lasts for about 4/5 days

hiya. sunbeds do make you skin age more prematurly and the tan will fade but not the wrinkles so go on less now you are brown and you should be fine. make sure you moisturise every time you use them and use a cream. you will only go wrinkly if yoiu dont keep your skin supple and hydrated.
