There are a lot of ways:
-Reading one of my favorite books, like Harry Potter or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
-Talking to one of my friends on the phone. They always make everything seem better!!
-Watching one of those sitcoms, like Full House, Raymond, or The Simpsons. The characters comical problems draw me away from my own.
-Depending on the season, play in the snow or swim in a lake/pool/ocean. This is even better with friends/siblings/family.
-Go shopping! You don't have to buy anything if you don't want to/can't afford to, just amuse yourself with the various stores.
-Try out a new recipe. Cooking is always great for me! Need some ideas? Go to http://www.foodieview.com/
Other ways that can relieve stress, but won't take your mind of the problem:
-Angry? Write a furious/evil letter or e-mail, but don't send it. You will regret it eventually, and the point is just to let off stress.
-Sad? My pets always cheer me up; I talk to them about my problems as if they can talk back. Don't have any? Try it with stuffed animals, or just vent to yourself.
-Another way to help yourself if you're sad is to let yourself cry, and think about it. Then you can get over it.

Swimming is a good sport. You're keeping busy, focusing on the effort, you're in a different environment (so it's easier to get your mind off things).
Ironing with music on helps too... I guess it's because it's a repetitive, somewhat relaxing, activity, that requires a little bit of concentration, but not too much.

Going to the gym and working out really hard, or taking the dog for a long walk... or going to a good movie (better than watching at home with all the distractions).

I notice that everyone is saying exercise... I recently tried YOGA for the first time and found it to be VERY relaxing! I went home and sleep like a baby that same night! It wouldn’t hurt to try it!
I also do kickboxing twice a week and it helps as well!

set your mind so you think in terms of a corridor, put each worry in a room behind a door in the corridor. shut and lock each door , and you as the only key holder, then when you are ready only open one door at a time, keep the others firmly locked. deal with each thought one at a time, do not open the door to another until until the room open is resolved. graguarly work down the corridor, as others worries come in, lock them in a room and forget them....... my corridor has stout doors made of hardwood so they cannot get out.
