Here's a surefire way to do something nice for someone.
Without a clue to them, sneak a note or send an e-mail to tell them how much of an inspiration they are to you or how great of a help they have been to you. Lay it on! This will snowball into other great things!!! Their work quality will pick up now that they have been appreciated. After that, they will pass on the favor to others, since they loved the feeling of appreciation and recognition. That will come back to you many times over.
The element of surprise gives the greatest impact to the heart. Make a sincere approach to someone that has touched you in a special way. You won't beleive how much you will touch them...

Thank someone who does something nice for you: the guy who holds the door open when you've got your arms full, the nice checker at the grocery store who's always cheerful and nice, the bagger boy who makes sure that your groceries aren't all lumped in one heavy bag, whoever. Just say "thank you" as you look them in the eyes and smile.
And try to do one nice ordinary thing for someone else: hold the door open for them, help them with something, whatever. Just an ordinary kindness.
