Cake recipe says preheat oven at 350 F how long do i need to preheat the oven??

usually a light or buzzer will let u know when ready,about 5- 10 minutes

Most of the more modern ovens will actually beep or in other way alert you when they are preheated. If yours doesn't do this, then I would just wait about 5-6 min. and that should do it. Good luck!

little secret ; most ovens will turn the heating elements off once the desired temperature is reached , then turn them on again as needed to maintain the desired setting. You can actually look into your oven to see when this is happening.
Two more secrets :
Always use the middle rack of your oven when baking and always rotate your food 180 degrees halfway thru the baking process. The backs of ovens tend to be hotter.

heat the oven before you get started and it should be ready , mine beep's when it's ready (about 10 minutes)
