A friend of mine had a road rage incident, and the guy flashed a badge. He thinks he was off duty. We argued about wether he could give him a ticket, even if he wanted to? This is in the Minneapolis, MN area.

So how about an off duty cop who passes you in a personal vehicle doing about 100 in a 70, then has time to slow down and flip you the bird, and then show you a badge, after you tap your horn at him when he drives by? Must have been on a call, NOT.

Minneapolis Police officers are sworen to uphoad the law 24/7 on or off duty. Your pal committed a crime, and was observed by a Police Officer who wrote him up. Good for the Police Officer.

If a cop is off duty they cannot give you a ticket. The only time you can get a ticket is if an on duty officer gets you.

Road rage could get someone killed. cops have a duty to protect the citizans, even if they are off duty.

FYI, road rage would result in your friend being arrested, not ticketed.

If an off duty officer can bounce someone out of a bar, arrest someone holding a gun or other weapon, I would guess he could give out a ticket. Only a guess. They go to court to testify against your actions, lots of other things.

depends, but most jurisdictions require "off duty" cops to uphold the law and in many cases carry a firearm. My feeling is yes the cop could give him a ticket.

i know that down here in FL, if you get pulled over by and off-duty cop (which doesnt really happen down here), they actually can't do anything. they would have to radio in for an on-duty officer and explain what they saw. and even then, most of the time they still cant do anything bc theres no proof. unless they catch you doing something on a dash-cam. but then again, why would they have the dash-cam on if they were off-duty??

Yes, if the guy was a police officer, he can give you a ticket.

There isn't such a thing as an "off-duty" police officer. If they see something criminal when they are technically off-duty, it is still their responsibility to stop it.

Hope this helps.
