Lions are not actually afraid of chairs. Their minds do not comprehend that the chair is separate from the person. They swipe at the chair, but can't hurt the lion tamer. They are baffled, and thus are put into a continuing position of subservience-reinforcing other training.
You would get seriiously hurt if you tried to stop a wild lion by using a chair- they would knock it flying and eat you.

They aren't frightened-they see the chair and the trainer as being the same creature,swipe at the chair and are puzzled when this doesn't seem to frighten or hurt the keeper.
A dog would do the same-if it was trying to bite you and you were holding a stick or bag between you he'd attack it thinking it was part of your body.
Circus's are cruel though.They shouldn't have animals.

Iinteresting! I tried waving a dinning-room chair at my cat..he only appeared to be afraid when I went to throw it at him (Logical). I can only conclude that lions only eat T.V. dinners off trays and have no idea of what a dinning room chair looks like.

They are scared of starvation. If they accept the chairs, next come tables and then cutlery and they would never get the hang of that before those greedy humans had cleared the plates.

Is it possible that the legs of the chairs are like the horns you get on wildebeast and antelope. I know lions wouldn't dare attack horned animals head on.
