kung fu should demonstrate their art in tournements rather then talking about how great the art is, and i have had enough of the excuse that the use eye and throat attack because any one can use those and doesnt give u an advantge. i rate kung fu as a dance so when idf ever is someone gonna have the balls to enter mma and show us the are better kung fu guys then jason delucia and that coward emin boztepe in the world. the gracies might not be the best fighters in the world but at tleast they represent there art and never give up

Here we go with another crybaby.

So do you want some cheese to go with that WHINE?

The disciplines of Kung Fu are just as effective as any other Martial Art, and anyone practicing doesn't have the need to prove it to YOU or ANYONE else, Nor do they have to compete (as Bluto suggested, since he mentioned that he has no desire to compete) to prove it.

So here's a tissue so you can quit your crying.

UFC, PRIDE, IFL, WCL, those're all sport fighting, and have nothing to do with what the TRUE meaning of Martial Arts is about, you can't use beating someone up as a barometer on how effective a Martial Art is because any bloody idiot with two fists two legs and a bad attitude can just as easily beat the piss out of someone on any given day.

you're just another one of these people that has to have someone PROVE to you what they can do.

But here's a newsflash for you, YOU'RE not anymore special than anyone else here, so no one has to prove anything to you.

but if you don't like the disciplines of Kung Fu, fine; that's cool, it's your opinion and opinions vary (and we all know what they say about opinions: they're like a**holes, everyone's got one)

but my question to YOU is: Do YOU have the Huevoes or the sack to go toe to toe with anyone that's studied a discipline of Kung Fu, or any Martial Art for that matter in a competition setting? I'm thinking that would be a resounding NO (since you've never made any mention about studying Martial Arts yourself, if you haven't then I rest my case as you being another one of the misinformed just poppin' off)

You sound just like Bob Wall and his "dirty dozen" challenging Steven Segal back in the early 90's. nothing but BLEH, BLEH, BLEH, WHINE, sniffle, siffle, whine.

I've been iritated by this as well. I'm a kung fu praticioner along with muy thai and jujitsu and I know its a good style (especialy eagle claw) . But heres the problem with most practicioners. You see there are 2 different kung fu's . There is modern kung fu ,which the shaolin monks created because the government made them as a form of entertainment, then there is traditional kung fu which is a good style and was designed for military use as alot of the monks helped train the chinese soldiers. But the government of china didn't trust the shaolin monks for some reason (my knowledge of this story is a little rusty) so they burnt it as the shaolin monks slept and most of them died. A few hundred escape escaped most of them the masters of their style. Several survived and were killed because they refused to obey the wishes of the emperor and the ones that lived are the ones that created this modern day basterdization of kung fu. It is very hard these days to learn real kung fu as a result of this as people are more interested in looking really cool than fighting for real.

I am training really hard and hoping that one day I can enter MMA competitions to bring honor back to my art . So if I make it far you may see me. My fighting name would also be The Wall (its a long story) I'm representing Eagle Claw, Tiger Claw, Monkey Kung Fu, Drunken Kung Fu, Muy Thai , and Jujitsu.

O ya and just so you know kung fu has alot of grappling counters and stuff that arent alowed because they are considered "clawing" and this inability to use them is crippling

Martial Arts have not been developed for the entertainment of the masses. Unfortunately todays MMA fans are by and large the same people who 5 years ago were watching WWF. I study Traditional Karate and I can tell you that 99% of people who come to study the art never get to a level where they are even shown the really devastating effects of fighting karate. When I first seen some of these moves as a dan grade I was gobsmacked at the ferocity and the potential damage that could be done. This would never be allowed in a sporting arena as in real karate your opponent is not supposed to walk away to fight another day. I believe many kung fu styles will be similar and do not belong in Sports Entertainment as they are meant to severely damage opponents.
ps How many Kung Fu Classes have you taken or are your terms of reference cheesy movies out of Poundland

Its a matter of principle and true honor. They are not in it for the glory or to demonstrate the skills or powers over others .....there religion is based off of balance with nature and harmony with the universe....not the duels or tournaments that has nearly destroyed the different schools of Kung Fu in China during the Tang Dynasty. The dance as you refer to is the forms that they have and the technique they aquire as well.......China is the base for almost all known Martial arts.......Tai Chi, Karate,Kenpo,Etc.......they are rivers that flow of the this big ocean of Martial Arts....

I AM a CMA stylist (chinese martial arts) and happen to agree with you.

However you overlook the fact that many xingyi practitioners do compete in san-da tournaments (chinese kickboxing that incorporates throws as well- you can look up san da rules online).
And San Da (san shou) is in fact a CMA or "kung fu" for slang.

personally I do show up and cross-train with a number of different arts but have no desire to compete. A former class-mate of mine did in fact train and fight in a number of amateur MMA bouts before moving.

While your basic premise: "it's too d34dly for the ring" or "it's too d34dly to spar" is unfortunately what ruins most CMA schools and teachers. Leaving the vast majority of schools basically dance factories.

No one is harder on CMA on this board than me. The realistic (aside from not training with resistance) problem is that most teachers view thier own system as a "complete" system ready for MMA, which to me, seems unrealistic as culturally bieng "thrown" to the ground in china would mean you lost. However in modern times (and we are not at war where you will get a spear through your gut if you are on the ground), the advent of ground fighting is real and many arts (not just CMA) ignore this reality and don't train realistically.

Even if you can't train "eye pokes", "small joint manipulation" and "throat strikes" or whatever you have in mind, in practice, then you should be able to train the other 99% of the art in sparring.

EDIT: Asian cultures and china are not even close to the originators of ALL martial arts. before there was even contact with asian cultures and in the ancient world there were Martial Arts of other cultures, From Greece to Rome to Africa. There is evidence of boxing bieng a complete hand to hand fighting system long before what it is today, techniques involving arm and elbow blocking, throws, and groin strikes. Europe tended to encompass the art of striking and grappling under the catchall term "wrestling".

EDIT2: actually "kung fu" or "gong fu" literally means "hard work".

You should read the art of war by Sun Tzu. It is very insightful and perhaps give you an better understanding of the answer you are looking for.
From the sounds of it your going to punch your computer up or something no matter the answer that is given but here goes.
KUNG FU is mastering the art to not fight. You fight because you need to prove to yourself and your opponent that you have better ability and understand you skill better than you opponent. One of the main understanding in knowing KUNG FU is the wisdom that you already posses. You can beat your opponent without conflict

I am not a martial artist, but am in love with one, and I have to finally say that it amuses me a great deal when someone comes on and says things like this.

You do realize you sound like a schoolyard bully, trying to start a fight? Martial arts have always been considered, by the layman, to be about *Self-Defense*. Where is going into a tournament to prove you are better at fighting than anyone else, DEFENSE?????

I have always understood, even before falling in love, that if you actually have to fight, you have already lost. That the power, the TRUE power, of martial arts, is in NOT fighting.

Go play in your sandbox, child. When you are mature enough to know that it does not matter what others think, you may come and speak with the adults again.

I am not a Kung Fu stylist but I know about martial arts.

The goal is to have enough control to NOT fight.

Were I a Kung Fu stylist I would read your post, snort, and say "what an *sshole".

I would also realize that you know NOTHING about the martial arts.

I can tell you something about Kung Fu stylists. I have sparred with them for my pleasure and theirs. There is nothing cowardly or weak about their styles. Trust me... I bear some permanent lumps from them. I assume you are going to call me a wuss for that.

Go ahead, knock yourself out.

Your opinion, due to your stupid question, means as much to me as a piece of toilet paper.

Oh, I am Dawn H's Love. :) She sent me this link to laugh at.

And I did.
