I answered this on a similar question already so I will just copy it here.
If you didnt injure your neck it is caused by posture related stress. I had this for many years and went through all kinds of drugs until I ran across one therapist who fixed me in a few days.

You need to release your upper traps and envolve your lower traps. To do this you sit down and have someone hold onto a towel. You then pull the towell in each hand to your waist. Each hand can either touch your waist or slip along each side.
by doing this and concentrating on using your lower middle back instead of your upperback and shoulders to pull the towel you are using the lower traps and this releases all stress that goes to the neck.
It works after doing the exercize for a few minutes for three or four days. Then you just always try to use the lower trap/back for everthing you do.

Sounds like muscle spasms. Make a rice sock, here's what you do. Get a tube sock, put rice in it(white or brown, instant or not)about 3cups,so the sock feels full but flexible. Tie a knot, and put it in the microwave, nuke for 2-3minutes. Remove,it will be VERY HOT!!!!!!!!Get a washcloth and place it on your neck/shoulders. Put the rice sock on the cloth, the cloth is protecting you so you don't burn the crap out of yourself. Sit back and relax, the deep moist heat should loosen things up. Move to whatever area you need. You can reheat the sock many times. Good luck.

It could be anything in your neck be it a slipped disc, muscle spasm, or even facet joint pain. The best thing to do is get a referral to an interventional pain management specialist who can help diagnose and treat your pain.

It sounds like a pinched nerve in your back. I suggest go to an orthopaedic specialist for a diagnosis.
