Gandhi was Hindu. However, what most westerners do not understand about its tradition is that it absorbs all great saints and incarnations. So for Gandhi Lord Jesus was the son of God and Muhammed was the Prophet of God. [They do not question matters relating to God, just accept].
His favourite incarnation was Lord Rama, known as “Maryadapurusthatamaya” literally most immaculate being and the scripture relating to Rama is the Ramayana [Bhavan’s book University C. Rajagopalachari]
For the greatest insight into his life his autobiography [M.K. Gandhi An Autobiography or The Story of my Experiments with Truth], is a very good source.
Best of all there is a Lady who used to live in his ashram when he was resisting the British who has taken on his spiritual quest and raised it to new levels; Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi web site www.sahajayoga.org

Gandhi was a HINDU! he lived and worked in INDIA, and was one of the most peaceful men in the world! it was his ideas of non violence that freed india from british rule! good question, because as i write this, i jsut got out of religion class, and we are focused on HINDUISM THIS WEEK! HINDUISM IS A POLYTHEISTIC RELIGION WHICH MEANS THEY BELIEVE IN MANY GODS! and reincarnation! does that help? dandidonna@yahoo.com
