Spackle the nail holes and go for it. You will need to prime the new surface. I JUST did this to my 95 year old kitchen

Another option is to buy textured paint in a bucket. They usually come in smooth, coarse, and sand textures. I sold a product that was available in two gallon buckets in each of these textures. There are specific texture roller covers for this type of paint, or it can be troweled on. After it dries, you would paint with a quality acrylic latex paint in the sheen and color of your choice. It may be less difficult and less messy. Of course, if the walls have an existing oil based coating you would want to first prime with a primer/sealer made to bridge between oil and latex coatings.

Absolutely. The only prep work that needs to be done is a lot of masking and papering - texture gets everywhere. After you have finished spraying the texture on the walls - allow 24 hours to dry and then paint as normal. If you wish to minimize the number of coats of paint - a single coat of Killz (primer) will help significantly.
good luck

Fill the nail holes then spray the texture material over everything. No need to prime first, but prime the texture once it has dried.
