And since trigger locks do not interfere with the ability to use a gun for defensive purposes, should we have police officers have one on their duty weapon?

Gun control laws have never reduced crime, a law against guns only becomes just another law the criminal ignore. After all, the criminals are criminals because THEY DONT FOLLOW THE LAW IN THE FIRST PLACE!.
Gun control laws are not about reducing crime, or any logical public service oriented reason. Gun control laws are to disarm the citizens so they cannot defend themselves against criminals or deranged governments. Simple as that.

I think a gun helps people feel safer within themselves. I know I feel safe knowing I have a gun in my home. I think they ought to screen mental patients better when they try to purchase guns. I don't think gun control laws have reduced crime. Just today someone shot up a mall in Utah. I work in a small mall and how scary is that to me now. I know some police officers and I honestly don't think they have time for a trigger lock. In the police officer's defense you really can't decide that until you are put into a position of whether to pull a gun out of your holster and shoot it. It is hard on police officer's to do this (or it is on the one's that I know). Not every police officer is the same. I think the gun control laws ought to be in affect for civilians but not for law enforcement because that is what they are there for is to protect and when you have a maniac that decides to go nuts in your mall, school, or wherever, you would be glad to know that those police officers make the right decision when they pull that gun out to shoot the one that is aiming at you.

Its really hard to say. And yes, when a police officer is off duty (not in a direct position to use his weapon as defense) they could certainly store their guns with trigger locks. I think the main problem is that guns are not tracked very well. Too many idiots get ahold of guns and make it bad for safe owners. I think gun control should be in place to keep the idiots and criminals from getting weapons.

But it could be argued that specific crimes have been reduced. For example, outlawing cop-killer bullets certainly reduces the likelihood of officers getting killed while on duty.

No, they don't. They enhance crime. large Britain's crime rates have skyrocketed because they banned guns. And in Washington D.C, the yank city with the strictest gun administration rules, the crime rates are larger then the different city in u . s . a .. guns are not the issue. Evil human beings are the issue. eliminating guns only takes them out of the palms of regulation abiding electorate. the criminal will nevertheless come across a fashion to get guns.

Gun laws have not reduced crime, in fact the opposite has happened. canada took the guns away from its citizens and all facets of crime rose statistically. Australia took its citizens guns away and the same thing happened.

Handgun control advocates would like for you to believe this nonsense, but in reality, all laws, not just gun laws, are effective only because of voluntary compliance, and law abiding citizens do not use guns in a criminal way.

I'm hoping an Australian will answer this. I had read stats that after their government took ordinary citizens guns away, that violent crime, home invasions and robberies sky rocketed because criminals wouldn't give up THEIR guns.............
