If you want to be a doctor, then you need to pay your dues with some long hours during medical school, residency and early in your career. As time goes on, you can find a work arrangement that suits your life.

I no longer work nights or weekends. My family appreciates that a lot. I had to put in a lot of hours to get where I am though.

There are specialties that don't require as much call as others. Dermatologists, radiation oncologists, and physical medicine/rehab are a few specialties that come to mind. If you want to go into obstetrics or general surgery, however, more of your life is going to be spent in the hospital.

Medicine is not for the lazy or half-hearted. Most of us are pretty compulsive workers - it's our nature.

You may want to consider a career in health care that doesn't require as much of your time - like physical therapy, pharmacy, speech therapy, dietitian, etc.

Good luck!

I don't work in the medical profession, but have questioned those who are. First of all, you need to ask yourself why you want to. If it is because you have a genuine interest and want to help people then by all means do it. If it is for the money and prestige forget it. There are many wonderful people who love what they do and want to help others. As for the "workaholic" , you can decide on a career in the field where that would not be required. There are so many choices (of types of doctors, surgeons, nurses, chiropractors, vets, natural, homeopathic, holistic, etc.). Find what interests you the most and go from there. You may change along the way to specialize in something you didn't even know about. Not all in the field have crazy hours. What we need is more people in the medical field who really care about their patients on a personal level and if you have that, you have more than a workaholic ever could. You can have a family you have time for and a job you enjoy-remember though...stay away from those that require extra long hours. Everyone should have a job they enjoy going to each day for many years as that determines much of your happiness in life and that goes the same for a family. Ask different doctors in your area this question as they will be able to answer the best. Hope this helps.

I don't know about doctors, but EMS is really a lot of work and very little pay. It is worth it, but not for monetary reasons. You do have to be careful about the workaholic issues though. Most people I've known who stay in any medical field for more than a couple of years tend to work a lot because of their personality types. Plus the fact that there is always more work to do than people to do them.

Some fields of specialization are more demanding than others. More and more physicians and surgeons practice in groups, hence they have night call less often. More women are in medicine, many of whom practice fewer hours because of family responsibilities.

Yes, there are many workaholics, many long suffering spouses, some neglected kids. My impression is, however, that those who have graduated in the past 20 years are more apt to allow for quality home time than those of prior generations.

Night call is a contentious issue. Few partners go for unequal sharing of call.

If you practice part time, your expenses still accrue at a full time rate, eg) malpractice insurance, health care, rent, utilities, etc.

You don't have to be a Doctor to work in the medical field. You can be a CNA, LPN, RN, MLT, EMT. Just to name a few. If you are the type of person who has need to help others. It is worth the work everyday. You don't have to be a workaholic! Some just chose to be.

I think it depends on the person or the job you choose I'm an EMT and I love every minute of the job it's exiting and something new every day! I'f you can deal with the gore you can do ALS (advanced) if you don't like the gore or can't deal you can always do BLS (basic), but that's me. I can't work in the controlled inviroment of a hospital because I get board too quick.
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH!
