Fresh bread slice will do it also 1/2 apple in the bag will do it. you can also buy a disk at the store to put in brown sugar that will help keep it soft.

In a kitchen shop I found these things called brown sugar discs. They are made of a food grade terra cotta and you soak it in water and put it in with your brown sugar and it keeps it soft. Sooner or later it will start to harden as the disc dries out but you just repeat the process. You can also use it for freshening old bread altho I haven't tried that.

put a little tiny piece of bread in the bag. It will not make the bread taste funny. THe bread will take the moisture from the sugar. Or, if that doesn't help, try putting in a small wooden spoon. Same thing.

Put the hardened sugar in an air tight container and place a DAMP paper towel inside with the sugar. Seal and leave overnight or at least a few hours.

The best way I have found is to place a piece of fresh bread in with it. The sugar will suck up its moisture and soften up again, while the piece of bread will harden.

Microwave it. But remember, the waves released by the microwave is attracted to fat, sugar, etc, and Brown Sugar is made with molasses, so don't microwave it too much at one time, or it will burn.

Place a slice of fresh bread in the bag and seal it. This works for cookies as well.
