When I questions my former employer they said. "wages were earned in 2005 but you received the check in 2006". "That's the way we've always done it." I believe this company is wrong in how they issue W2's.

When you are eventually paid is separate from when you earned the right to be paid.

If you worked the last week of December 2005. That is considered to be income earned for 2005. The company accrues the obligation to pay you in Accounts Payable into 2006.

If the check was dated 2006, then they are correct by including it in 2006 income even if it was for work done in 2005. If the check was dated in 2005 but you didn't get it until 2006, then it should have been included on a 2005 W-2 and on your 2005 return.

Come on now, you don't really want to have to go back and file an amendment to your 2005 return, do you?

Depends when you worked there...If it was on the border between 2005 and 06, then he might have a point. If that isnt the case and he sent you the W-2 a year later, youre gonna have to file an amended return for 2005 if that money wasnt included in your 05 return.

in case you already filed a return for that tax 3 hundred and sixty 5 days you may get a duplicate of the return from the IRS. that would desire to contain a duplicate of the W2. in case you haven't any longer ifled your return yet there is not any thank you to get a duplicate different than from the enterprise. you may get it from them, and that they'd desire to offer it upon request. If it incredibly is for tax 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 2006, the W2 hasn't been produced via your enterprise yet; that may not ensue till January. they are required to mail them out via a million/31/07. you will would desire to attend till that's obtainable interior the mail.
