Hi I've been having chronic neck pain for quite a while maybe 2-3 months and it is on and off weekly. It is specifically on my left side on the back of the head. also other surrounding places. I'm 18 so it seems it's not "just getting old". My doctor told me to take 600mg Ibuprofen every meal for 5 days to see if it was an inflamatory problem. i only did it for three because i kept forgetting, but it didn't help. Can anyone help?

See an interventional pain mangaement specialist who can help diagnose and treat the cause of your pain. Neck pain can come from several areas including the disc, muscle, and facet joints of the neck.

Is it in your neck or the left back side of your head? It's not clear. Unless you have had an injury, I would try the Ibuprofen as directed again, this time taking the full dose. By missing or not taking the meds correctly, stops the healing from progressing properly. It normally takes about 10 days of proper treatment to get relief from Ibuprofen. You also could use a heating pad to ease muscle tension. If you have serious concerns about your neck I would contact an orthopaedic doctor, unless your symptoms are severe I think you will be treated very conservatively, mainly because of your age. You can purchase a foam cervical collar and wear it after school/work to rest the muscles in your neck, they cost about 20bucks. Good luck.

Go see a Chiropractor! I have had neck and back pain on and off for years. I was feeling much pain, I have been going to the Chiropractor for four weeks, and I have absolutely NO pain! I did not use any medication what soever. Oh and the person who said heat is wrong, I thought heat would help too, and tried it, it did not help one bit, my Dr says cold compress. (chiropractor says)
I hope you are feeling better soon, by the way after the second adjustment, the pain was gone!

If you didnt injure your neck it is caused by posture related stress. I had this for many years and went through all kinds of drugs until I ran across one therapist who fixed me in a few days.

You need to release your upper traps and envolve your lower traps. To do this you sit down and have someone hold onto a towel. You then pull the towell in each hand to your waist. Each hand can either touch your waist or slip along each side.
by doing this and concentrating on using your lower middle back instead of your upperback and shoulders to pull the towel you are using the lower traps and this releases all stress that goes to the neck.
It works after doing the exercize for a few minutes for three or four days. Then you just always try to use the lower trap/back for everthing you do.

Go see a chiropractor. He'll put your neck back in alignment & it won't hurt anymore.

If you go don't believe one that says you have to go 3 times a week for so many weeks etc. A couple of adjustments should put you right.

You can either go back to your doc or consider seeing a chiropractor. Also if you put the ibuprofen by your daily vitamins you will be more likely to remember to use it when you are supossed to take it.

How do you know it didn't help, if you didn't even do it as long as the doctor told you? Do what the doctor told you before you decide it didn't work.
