In defending Christians who have told blatant, outright lies as part on their ministry (Mike Warnke, Jim Bakker, Ted Haggard, Charles Blair, Peter Popoff, Paul Barnes, Larry Davis, just to name a few) I have heard time and time again from Christians that, “Everybody lies.”.
So what makes you think the authors of the New Testament were any more honest than Christians today? Why are they any different?
And please do give that old tired line of god wrote the Bible.

We have a lot of suicide bombers who seem to be willing to die for a bunch of fairytales.

Kallan's sort of right in principle, but most of the NT can be reasonably dated earlier than 300 years: the letters of Paul mostly date from the 50s CE, although the gospels are late first and early 2nd century CE. The writers came from a variety of communities in the eastern mediterranean, and were informed by varying blends of traditional Jewish and Graeco-Roman ideas.
There's a problem with the concept of "lying" and "honesty" in your question. The NT writers were undoubtedly sincere in writing about their spiritual experience. They were also writing from a particular time and place and culture, and a lot of 21st century readers seem to be blind to that.

The Bible (New Testament) was written by God. There, I said it.
What makes it true? Jesus Christ.
It's the Word of God written so that we have guide-lines, you know directions.
Stop and take time to read the directions before blinding going off and doing something silly that is covered.

The apostles were men of good character that had nothing really to gain from spreading the Gospel if it were not the truth. In fact many of the apostles were beaten and killed for their faith in God with the chance to renounce Jesus the entire time in order to save themselves. But moreover, you can trust the Bible not because of men, but God!

They, for one thing, willingly allowed themselves to be martyred, some crucified rather than deny the things they had seen and heard. Who would die to protect lies and fairy tales they had made up?

Whose to say that they are even written by the authors to whom they are attributed? The oldest document is dated 300 years after the alleged death of Jesus.
