Small children can hurt dogs even though they may not mean to do so. Small dogs can get injured and can feel the need to fight back against children because they feel threatened. I would opt for a larger dog like a retriever which is less likely to get hurt by a child. Remember that children should never be left unsupervised with any dog.

Some dogs are better with kids then others in that since it is true. But how does your yorkie act with kids? Your child will have to be trained to handle a dog with the proper respect. Before you introduce the yorkie or any dog to your child take your childs favorite toy or clothing for the dog to smell a few different times so it is used to the smell of your child. At a pet shop some will allow you to put your deposit down and visit your puppy a few times, be sure before you bring any new dog into your home you walk it real good before bringing it into the home, and do not let it explore every room, keep like the kitchen as his/her area first then week by week introduce a new part of the room. Make sure you always exit and enter YOUR home before the dog. If you establish your leadership early you should be ok on many areas. Are you planning on getting a shelter yorkie or puppy or older yorkie? That all makes a difference. If your getting a puppy you should not have problems as long as you teach your child how to handle a puppy/dog properly. Make sure the breeds energy level meets your own.

Your mileage may vary, but generally, small dogs and small kids don't mix well. The chance the child might fall on the dog , or grab it incorrectly could mean serious damage to a yorkie. Not the case at all with say, a lab or even a cocker spaniel size dog.

And to make matters worse, small dogs often feel threatened by the ungraceful, jerking movements and loud noises of small children. When they feel fearful, often they will bite.

If you must have a yorkie, I would wait until the child is five at the very least.

My inlaws had a 4 year old Yorkie when my daughter was born. We stayed with them alot due to health complications with my wife. The dog was great. We didn't think twice about leaving her alone with our daughter. When my daugther was three, we got her a dog of her own because she loved the yorkie so much. We ended up getting a Silky terrier instead of Yorkie because we were worried about out daughter hurting the dog, not the dog hurting her. Silkys are a little bigger and more sturdy than yorkies (especially the teacup yorkies that most people are selling now). Both are great, great pets (don't shed, very playful), but they are very hard to potty train, so be prepared for that!

I don't know if it has to do anything with the breed as I have a friend who has 3 yorkies and 3 kids ages 1,3,5. They get along fine. i would suggest that if you do get a yorkie you get a puppy so it grows up with the kids. Bringing in an adult dog who is set in its ways may not do so well. You should check with local pet rescues or shelters, they often know if the dog has been around children and how they do. They are usually evaluated before being put up for adoption.

Toy dogs + small children = disaster.

There may be a FEW exceptions, but overall toy breeds are not good with small children. They are hyper, nippy, and delicate, and a 2 year old cannot be taught to respect any of those conditions. Your best bet is a much larger, sturdier breed. I'm a groomer, and I groom a Yorkie who was rescued from a home with small children, and he is neurotic and terrified of everything because he had to deal with over zealous children every day. It's heartbreaking. Please get a larger dog, or wait until your child is over 10 years of age to get the Yorkie.

Also, don't mix puppies and kids! That's another dangerous combination. Adopt an older shelter dog, that is truly the best and safest way to go with toddlers.

It really depends on how you raise them. If you raise and train your yorkie, they will get along fine.

My friend who is married and has two kids (6 & 3) has a yorkie and a chi. She just told her kids how to act with the dogs, and not to be rough and things like that. The dogs love her kids and at first she was apprehensive about getting a Chi. but as long as everyone knows their part and you train them and teach your kids about the care and safety of animals you will be fine.

Good Luck!

Most very tiny dogs are very nervous of toddlers, so yes they will get nippy. None of the toy breeds are a good choice with a toddler, and no matter what dog you choose, a 2 year old needs to be taught from day one how to treat a dog. To be safe, you also need to make sure you don't leave them unsupervised.
