Try going online. There are tons of places you can look so that you get a good idea of your style and price range before you even hit the jewlery store. Also, if you wanted to, you could purchase your ring off the website you were playing around on.

Just have an idea of what your girlfriend wants. You can get a huge diamond that is not great in color or clarity for the same price as a smaller diamond that is clear and flawless. When you go to a jewelry store ask the salesperson to pull all the rings in your price range and that will give you a better idea of your options. Good luck!

There are four C's:

1) Cut - This is more than simply the shape. A well-cut diamond has the correct shape, symmetry and proportions

2) Color - closer to colorless is more desirable. Poor quality stones tend towards yellow. Industrial-grade diamonds (cutting tools) are brown.

3) Clarity - less imperfections are preferable

4) Carat weight - this is self-explanatory

Look at LOTS of different diamonds at MANY different jewelers. A small high-quality diamond will look larger and sparkle more than a larger low-quality stone.
