My dog, Maggie, a 4 year old Labrador Retreiver, recently started "crying". Now I know some tearing at the eyes is normal but recently it's become very goopy and a greyish brown colour. It doesn't seem to be bothering her and I've wiped it gently off with a warm cloth the past few days (I wiped around her eye not on the eye). It's just not the nicest looking stuff (is goop ever nice looking?) and I'm worried it could get worse. Any advice would be helpful, and I know that taking her to the vet is the number one answer so please, something more constructive than that would be beautiful. Thank you.

Two of my dogs get seasonal allergies which are common where I live. I do what you do and my Vet recommended that unless the eye became infected because just like with kids, medicines given when not needed can lower their resistance. You can try using a soft cloth dipped in steeped and room temperature Camomile tea as long as it is pure Camomile with no other added teas. Look at the box to be sure. This has natural cleansing qualities. If improvement is not noticed the next day or if the dog gets worse, take him to a Vet.
It could be something common and easily treatable and I hope it passes soon.

I agree with the poster who says she should be examined by a vet.
But, if you really can not take her or in the meantime before you take her then you could boil up some chamomile tea, let it cool down to lukewarm (double check so you do not burn her!), and dip a soft cloth in the tea and gently wipe the eye out.
Chamomile is natural and soothing to inflamed areas. It is pefectly safe to use in the eyes as well.
Make a new batch of tea for every eye wiping session.
I hope she gets better soon. Good luck.

I would say do for Maggie what you would do for yourself. It is irresponsible to not take care of the health of you pets. The goopy stuff as you call it is probably from an infection that need medication to recover. I know this is not the answer you wanted to hear and I'm sorry for that but sometimes there are not any at home remedies that you can use for what you are describing. Try this website.

It sounds like your dog has an eye infection and short of taking him to a vet is all you can do. He probably needs an antibiotic to get rid of the infection.

One of my dogs has had this in one of his eyes for years now. The vet said not to worry about it, nothing you can really do except keep cleaning it out.

Runny eyes can be a sign of allergies-usually food. Let the vet have a look.

my suggestion is take her to the vet for some eye drops or ointment. it sounds like an eye infection, they can get pretty bad and are very infectious. wash your hands after handling her and make sure that if you have other dogs that they are not getting it too.

Do you want the poor thing to go BLIND? GET HER TO THE VET, your not a vet so don't try to treat it based on what people you don't know and don't know the skill level of. GO TO THE VET!
I hope for her sake you go! It could be simple and it could be serious, are you willing to wait to see?
Call your vet... see what they say.... Do you even have a vet? Look up vets in your area online, easy as that!
Good luck!

could be something as simple as dirt in the eye, or it could be an infection. Keep an eye on it.
