dont know babe but I was driving down the motorway with my daughter at the side of me when some ducks flew over, I said OH duck and she did under the dashboard. I nearly crashed with laughing

Because duck also means to get down and dodge something, and calling someone chicken is calling them afraid.

Answer is obvious, but another interesting fact about language is that all masculine words (eg lion, stallion, old dog, man, lad, stag, chap, bull, ram,him) can be seen as positive and flattering, whereas feminine equivalents (sow, *****, mare, woman, girl, mistress, cow, her etc) can be seen as insults. Now that would have been a more interesting observation.

Because they are both birds names but also mean other things IE to duck = to move your head forwards avoid something! & chicken a terminology for a coward!
