I was thinking of getting a tat on my forearm, but I don't want to get one just to cover it up all the time. My job is retail management, do you think it's accepted? Thanks.

That depends on a couple of things.... NO your gang tattoos on your hands and fingers and arms are not going to be accepted by most people and you're not going to advance much further than flippin burgers or working in construction.
You can pretty much forget a job that requires you to deal with the public if you have tattoos on your face. That being said......The times are changing. Nicely done tattoos, (tattoos that don't look like they were done in an alley by someone named Spike) are becoming more and more acceptable.
As my own personal choice, I choose not to have my Face, Neck, and Hands tattooed. MY TATTOOS ARE FOR ME. Therefore I DON'T feel a need to flaunt them in the publics face. I'm not ashamed of them....but I am so much more than my tattoos. The first thing I want people to see is ME and not my ink.

sorry, I'll get down off of the soapbox now.

Don't be naive. Tattoo's make an impression. I am an elementary school teacher with 3 tats, 2 visible depending on clothing. At the beginning of the school year, I always give my kids and parents time to get to know me before wearing clothes that reveal my tats. You have to know your audience. I didn't advertise them when interviewing for my job....but I'm not ashamed of them. I just KNOW that they make an impression. However, they are becoming more common in all professions. It is also dependent upon what part of the country your living in. I live in the mid-west. I imagine the west coast would be different. BTW, forearm tattoo's are HOT!

That is something to run by your employer. Usually retail and customer service type jobs don't really appreciate visible tattoos. Its not always because your boss is trying to be a d*ck, but usually because you have to keep the customer in mind.

Chances are, you'd have to keep it covered at work. Even places like Hot Topic are becoming a little more picky due to poor impressions left on young shoppers.

I personally don't care if people have tattoos or not, but other people can be a different story altogether. Better safe than sorry, pick a different location.

I am lucky enough to be a stay at home mom, so my "co-workers" dont care if I have a full body suit, and my older kids say that their friends think their mom is cool. I have them on my hand, neck, arms... well I have 24 tatts so that should tell ya enough. I do feel that tattooed people are frowned upon in mainstream public. It's really a shame cause most tattooed people would give you the shirt off their back. I personally wouldnt care if the doctor doing open heart surgery had a tattoo or not, as long as he knows what he's doing ;)

I have forearm tats, and show them with pride. Sadly theree are people out ther that think you are a thug, gangster, skinhead, tramp, and all sorts of other terrible things because you are tattooed. Luckily, I don't give a steaming pile of shi't what they think. I have a great life, and a better job than probably most of those judgmental prudes. It is all about the way you carry yourself too. I hold my head with pride wherever I go. If you get your forearms tattooed, you may be a target for closed mindedness. But there Will always be a cold beer for you at my house. (Rant off)

Unfortunetly, we live in a society that still judges based on appearance, it sucks, but as of now, there ain't nothing we can do about it. Instead of your forearm, get it down the back of your leg, or on your back. I have 2 tats and my rule is: Be able to cover it up if you need to. If I'm out at a club, then yes, I'll be wearing something more sexy and revealing. I have one my lower back, but I'll never be wearing something at work that would be showing my bare mid-section, you know? Think about it, you don't want to regret a tatoo.

Honestly, some places accept it and some don't. The store where I work does. Hell, they also allow facial piercings!

It really all depends on where you end up working in life and whether you are willing to take the chance of limiting your possibilities of getting a job somewhere nicer because of the tattoo.

I have noticed, though.. that smaller towns are a lot more strict on tattoos and peircings than bigger ones anymore. My town is a little different (people have learned to accept my facial piercings and seeing my tattoo if my shirt comes up at work)... but yeah.

it really all depends on the place where you are working. i work in a hospital and i work with some guys who have tattoos on their forearms. i used to work at blockbuster video and they had a rule that you could not have any tattoo showing at any time. but i have a friend who works at a library and he has lots of tattoos, some that show. SO it really depends on the specific place that you work. how many tattoos do you have? i would go for more discreet tattoos at first and not venture to the forearms until you are certain about it.

I think tats are cool and have no problem with someone wearing them in public. The rest of the will never accept them fully.

I am wanting to get a tattoo on my forearm, and another on my wrist, but I am going to ask my boss about it first. I would hate to get it done, only to find out that i'll have to wear long-sleeves for the rest of my career!
