I have a YJ, a CJ and an M38A1 There is just something cool about a genuine war jeep with all the cutouts for a snorkel, turrent, and whatever that recess stuck behind the right front tire was for. If you get a jeep to replace the two it would have to be a tj or newer type of wrangler. These are more comfortable and very much less "Jeepy". Heck, you might even stay dry. Realistically I think a jeep is only a great everyday driver if you live somewhere tropical. I recently bought a chevy impala because I was tired of dtiving that bouncy yj around everywhere (an' being wet when I got there too). Right now you have the best of both worlds (tj-newer won't turn heads like the M38A1 either), your work and play cars do need to be separate!

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.0L and I have had no problems with it so far. The only thing that I have had to replace has been the radiator, which was cracked when I bought it in 2005, replacing the brakes and tires, which were worn out from wear. (A word of advice, Jeep parts are expensive. The radiator for my Jeep was $300+, which I could have purchased 3 radiators for my husband's Ram for that price). As electrical or mechanical problems go, I haven't had a problem with either. I absolutely love my Jeep and would recommend one to anyone that is interested in purchasing one. But like the guy said just before me, it depends on if the Jeep was cared for if you are deciding to get an older model. Before buying, have a mechanic you trust to check it out, not the one where you are buying it from because they will tell you anything, a bunch of lies, to get you to buy it.

You have a classic Jeep you should keep! I have had 5 Jeeps and have loved all of them and there are differences in all of them. A Wrangler will ride better than your M38 cause it is has a longer wheelbase. The 87-95 models ride good for a leaf spring suspension ( I had a 95 ) compared to the CJ models ( I had a 78 and a Scrambler ) but the 97 to present are exceptional to all of them due to their coil spring suspension ( I have a 2004 ). The engines in the early 87 to probally 90 models are troublesome due to the carbs in them but any fuel injected models are very good and the 4.0 liters are some of the best motors made. Hope this helps some but keep the M38 also!

Jeep Wranglers are like any other vehicle, there are great ones and there are lemons. Most fall into the mid range of being very reliable. The factor is always, how it was maintained and cared for. I have owned five Jeeps over the years. I started with a CJ5 and owned two Wranglers, a Cherokee, and a Liberty. Take care of them and they are great cars. Buying used is Russian roulette. jeeps can be abused more often then other vehicles. Just avoid highly modified ones, and ones with obvious damage. They are pretty easy to fix and as a result are inexpensive to maintain.

Get a jeep (any jeep). They are very reliable or at least the jeeps that had the inline 6 engines are, and great on gas too. They go anywhere, and are very dependable. Easy to modify (offroad use) as lift kits are easily found for these trucks.

One is an actual Jeep, the other is a warmed-over Chrysler product. If you're wanting anything even resembling a capable 4x4 vehicle, then I wouldn't even consider the Patriot. (In all honesty, I wouldn't consider any Chrysler product at this time. Who knows if they'll survive this recession.)

I would keep it being the fact CJ-5 didn't come into production untill 1955, with a few proto types built in late in 1954.

They are not the mot comfortable when driving on the highway for a really long trip, but that can be modified with suspension and better tires.

They're not the most comfortable vehicles ever made and they can get tiring on the long trips but they are fairly reliable vehicles if they're taken care of, if you want one for off road use I would recommend it, if you want it for daily transportation I would suggest getting a SUV instead.
