i just searched for recipes for apple butter (inspired by a previous question i posted) and some of the recipes didnt inclue actual butter...is butter just describing the texture?

I think it is a cross between the texture and that it is served on bread. It certainly does not have a jam or jelly consistancy. Whatever the reason it is still my favorite with peanut butter!!

Apple Butter has no actual "butter" in it. However the consistency and what it is used for is the reason for the name. Apple Butter is slow cooked in a copper kettle (just like apple sauce) for hours over an open flame. Cinnamon and sugar are usually added for flavor. Yes the texture and the use as a spread on bread, etc... just like butter.
