married friend, whom, I told in a round about way i thought she was attractive, appears to have taken offence. In these days when it seems ok to talk about anything, was i wrong?

She may think you are disrespecting her marriage. By telling her you think she is attractive you may have put her in a panic, and made her feel like she is cheating.

My wife is a married woman, there are lots of things I can't say to her.

Let's go down the list

10. Damn honey those slacks really make your AZZ look fat
9. Damn honey that new hairstyle, although it's quick and convenient really makes you look old
8. Damn honey those old lady panties, although I'm sure they're comfortable, really make you look like your mom
7. Damn honey, I know the dog farts sometimes, but the dog isn't in the room.
6. Honey can I stay here at Hooters for a couple more hours?
5. Could you stop by the store and get some beer the fellas are coming over to watch the game.
4. Honey I met this girl and she's interested in a threesome, can I get you to call your girlfriend over?
3. Hey honey could you work some overtime tonight, I need a new propeller for my airplane, and my secretary wants more flight lessons.
2. Gee honey are your really going to eat all of that food? Your AZZ already has it's own zip code.

and the number one thing you can't say to a married woman

1. Can we have sex tonight?

I'm not sure exactly how you said it or how close you are but I wouldn't telling a woman that she is attractive would cause too much of a problem. I'm no longer married but I wouldn't have been offended. There is a woman in our office who is married and she has never taken offense to men telling her that she is attractive.
