This really depends on your taste and on what food (if any) you'll be having the wine with.
You can't go wrong with Italian Chianti - Sainsbury's sell a good one, "Melini Chianti" (regular price £6.49 i think, but it is often in special offer).
Spanish Tempranillo and Rioja are also good, fruity and flavoursome, can be drunk with a meal or on their own. Stowell's Tempranillo is acceptable, but you can find much better ones.

My favourite have to be Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is not easy to find good ones in UK.

I suggest you buy a few different wines and try for yourself which ones suit your palate best.

Pricewise... best value for money are 50% off (specal offer) wines in supermarkets, although in UK expensive wines are not necessarilly very good...

Oh, and always buy wine in glass bottles with cork stoppers!

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Cheers!

Try Greg Norman's 2001 Limestone Coast Shiraz Cabernet

This blend has become an Australian classic. The Shiraz (80%) contributes spice, ripe plum and blackberry aromas and flavors, with rich mulberry and fine velvety tannins coming from the Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) fruit. Attractive cedar and vanilla characters are derived from oak maturation, and contribute good complexity and great length of flavor.

Should be easy to find and cheap as well.

Like the man said, cheap and best don't go together. However, try Badger's Creek (Australian) about £6.00 a bottle, or Williams Grove (about £3.00 a bottle, also Australian). Alternatively, French Mouton Cadet is good at about £7.00 a bottle.
However, if you really want to push the boat out, try Mouton Rotschild '62. However, do be prepared to take out a second mortgage on your back teeth!!

don't know how cheap, cheap is, but... I like Brown Brother's Tarrango. It's light and fruity and costs about £6. It's delicious! Look out for the special offers at Tesco and Sainsbury, you can usually get some good deals.

I live in France and have found out that the average French man doesn't know bugg.er all about wine and that he buys it on price the same as we Brits do! I'd say go for a medium priced one the same as I do here and you can't go wrong.
