This is something that is worn for protection against the evil one and it is promised that anyone who wears it and dies with it on will not suffer eternal damnation.

People who wear it practice a special devotion to Mary. In the past, this was the Little Office of Our Lady. Today, this can be commuted by any priest to the Rosary. The person also has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation.

The entrustment, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular: "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire."

Do not think that this is superstition or magic. Catholicism teaches that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular reminds us of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance.

God Bless You

Wearing one, as you describe, is nothing more than an expression of a superstition. Wearing one for 'protection' is just like carrying a rabbits foot for 'good luck'. The scapular is supposed to be worn underneath your clothes, yet it is supposed to be a symbol for others to know of your pledge to a confraternity, a saint, or a way of life. Nonetheless, if it makes you happy, wear one. This is an old Roman Catholic/voodoo thing!

I used to wear one growing up. Several people in my family were priests or nuns, and they would always bring us one from the Vatican whenever they would visit. I haven't worn one in 25 years.

I remember their visits where always solemn but peaceful.

I did in the past, daily, but now it's in my religious bible memento box with my other items.
(I actually sowed a green scapular to my plain brown one, after it wore apart.)

See that's where the Catholics lose me.All their superstitious nonsense. There's only God for protection,no scapulas,or Mormon underwear or red Buddist good luck tags or plastic Jesus'.If Jesus is in your heart you will not suffer damnation if He isn't ,no amount of metal or paper idols will help you.No incense ,no candles,no paying indulgences ,zip, zero, nada.
