track... there are more options...

As you can see from the variety of the answers, the one you find most fun may have something to do with your personality and mental outlook.

Track is more regimented and precise. The course is standardized and races are accurately measured and meticulously timed. If you are an intense detail person or someone who likes statistics and hard data with your running chances are track is your preference. Also, although track is techinically a "team" sport, there are so many events that people tend to focus more on their individual performance rather than the team over all, so if you are more of an "individualist" out to do your own thing you may like track.

Cross country is a lot looser and laid back. In high school, the courses are all "about 3 miles," but precise distance isn't easy to establish. Times are tracked but rarely does a hundredth (or even a tenth) of a second matter because the event is scored by finishing position it's more of a big picture event. If you are a more relaxed intuitive runner who enjoys a fluid racing dynamic then chances are you will prefer cross country. As was noted in another answer, cross country tends to provide an incredible team bonding experience. It has more of the feel of a team sport than track. If that feeling is important to you then you are also likely to favor cross country.

Of course these are generalizations and not every track or cross country team (or coach) will be the same, but you can use these generalizations as a guide to see which one to try first. Then you can try the other and see if you like it more.

XC is much better...see, we're just all crazy, and we don't have to spend the entire time on the track, which, if you've spent any amount of time on the track, running 8 miles on it will drive you up the wall. Also, you can do so much more during a cross country practice, like go for bagels (which is not something Coach recomends, but...:)), or go trash picking on tree lawns, or play capture the flag in a parking garage (which almost got us arrested). Either way, it's just because XC is filled with real athletes....you don't have to be a good runner to run track; however, if you're not an ok runner, you'll never make it through an xc season alive.

to begin i do agree with what someone said, most true runners do both cross country and track. but there is no doubt in my mind when i can say from the heart, cross country is so much better. Not only does it force you to strive for more but its just more entertaining. Who wants to run in circles for a race, why not run through meadows and woods and fields. Enjoy the scenary as you run. The best part is the feeling as you sprint towards the end lined by people screaming your name. Cross country is a much better sport compared to track. Running on a track is about as much fun as running on a treadmill.

Hello,

That depends how you define "fun". I loved cross-country (XC) in high school...but it was largely because of the people. When a team runs the same grueling workouts and races, they form a common bond. Everyone gets to run in XC and it takes 5 runners to score points...so it's a team effort, not individual.

That being said, Track is also a great sport and you have the excitement of the grandstand, bleachers and the variety of events. I ran all three (indoor & outdoor track + XC)...and I wouldn't have traded those experiences for the world! Have fun!

This is a really hard decision...
I'd have to say XC. The team becomes like a family, and some of my best friends have come from past XC teams. I love races moreso than track because theres so many more people at a time in an XC race than in a track race. The longer races allow for more strategy, and the finish line tastes so much sweeter.

Most do both. Its distance running and you can run the long events in track. Track meets are very social events and you can meet a lot of cool people while hanging out waiting for your event to be called. AND all the people are in good shape and worth seeing. Cross country is cool too especially if you like to run in rural settings and overland in parks. Do both, one is a fall sport and the other a spring sport. Get two athletic letters and become good at a sport you can do the rest of your life to stay in shape. Football and basketball are team sports and ruin your legs and joints. Do both track and CC and it will keep you in shape year round. You will look good in your jeans year round.

XC no doubt

I love track, since you can directly compare your position and times to anyone else in the world, unlike XC (different course / course conditions each time (mud, gravel, ect.))

However there's nothing like running races in the woods...the creeks, trees, and other surroundings make it very enjoyable

At my school, XC is a much smaller tight group that has much more fun :)

I love track too but I do get a liitle bit sick of running around the rubber oval after a while

Cross Country is much better, unless you enjoy running around in circles! It is also more challenging in terms of the different elements you will face. Some courses have hills, trail running, etc that you wouldn't normally encounter when running track.

I would think cross country is more fun. It seems like you would like seeing the scenery and meeting so many people. Plus you really don't need to be the best runner, and if your team wins state and you had nothing to do with it, you still get a state ring!
