I think
1) It should only be used on the roads.
2)It does not look smart- you look no different than a bin man or road sweeper & I feel this affects the respect you should command.
3)The whole flourescent yellow thing is overdone their is so much of it about now it no longer stands out.
4)I saw a copper the other day in the old style uniform helmet, tunic, long dark overcoat complete with shiney buttons & he realy did look the part a real figure of authority & like someone not to be messed with.
DO YOU COPPERS AGREE WITH ME ON ANY OF THIS ?

I recently retired after thirty years service.During most of that service we only wore yellow when engaged on duties on the highway which I think was correct. The modern police officer is a different breed we wanted to be able to be not seen in some circumstances especially at night but the modern officers are constantly going on about health and safety which didnt apply to the police until recently and I am ashamed to say it but some prefer the offenders to see them coming and run off before they have to confront them.

The uniform is pretty crap I agree. The material used in the jackets in my force look like you've been through the wars after a couple of weeks. The jackets start to fray and get very dirty very quickly, they don't clean up well and the jacket get even more frayed if you wash it. I don't wear my jacket f I can help it which is most of the time.

I totally agree you, you only need HI VIS clothing when your out on the roads and other such like environments like Railway lines etc though I wouldn't want to go back to the uniform I had in the 1980's.

when you saw the copper the other day was he on a road? was it his helmet that he was wearing, that made him look different to everyone else stood around him in there dark dingy clothes. im sure without his helmet he wouldn't of stood out!
dont think we should bin the fluorescent coats (and I'm sure there was no pun intended in comparison to the road sweepers or bin men) its is not supposed to make use look smart (much to my dismay the uniforms are not designed for fashion shows nor practicality!) it is to make sure we are seen and not knocked over much to the aboves dismay, though I'm sure if we were there would be a claim and that would be greatly reduced if not wearing flourscent clothing. i only wear mine if I'm walking the streets on a Friday and Saturday night in the city centre to make me more noticeable compare to everyone else and if I'm working nights for obvious reasons. other than that its behind my seat and i have a black coat on. plus the only respect these days comes from the older generation any way who would prefer the older traditionally uniform.

p.s. confused ! i am in realtion the wages we are suppsed to get im in the wrong force obviously if everyone else is getting 100k!

Hello there... you make good points, but unfortunately we don't get any say... it's all driven by health and safety law etc. etc. these days. I agree the old style uniform is more smart and until recently I still wore my tunic to court and official occasions, however we now HAVE to wear stab vests and the like and it's no longer practical to wear the old stuff. High viz stuff should be worn in the dark, but they don't issue black raincoats any more.

The police uniforms in the UK are among the poorest quality I have seen. Why are those who do really essential and often dangerous jobs un the UK get less benefits than people like salesmen etc?

Unfortunately the police are ruled by the politically correct and bleeding hearts brigade.
Let these professionals wear a suitable uniform for their job. flourescent coats when on traffic duty.

Yes they do have a tough job.... who you gonna call when your cars been stolen and you get a battering from a gang of hoodies after your mobile.... yep the cops.

Respect for them .. they are worth £100,000 yearly each and every one, but that will upset the yuppies!

The Police are legally required to guard existence and limb (decrease than i think of section a million %. Police And criminal information Act 1984) subsequently they'd be actual breaking their very own code of education and the regulation, as maximum of idiots have threatened to reason harm to her this is risk-free to declare she may be in threat from particular people. it wasn't very severe high quality what she did and she or he does deserve publicly shaming for what she did yet thats it, its abit loopy to be making threats to kill over putting a Cat in a wheelie bin, you may desire to be thinking what occurring interior the previous bags head, may be she is dropping the plot and f**ok each and each of the thumbs down

I soo agree, i hate looking like a giant Lemon.
and how the hell am i suppose to chase a criminal with all that gear on ill never know!!!
Our uniform is also very dated, i think we should have combats instead of the simon cowell trousers and polo shirts instead of the crappy ones we have now.

My rant over!
