my cat gets hairballs. what should i do?

You can get hairball remedy at any petshop - Also keep the cat well brushed so it doesn't ingest as much hair.

Cats who get hairballs are eating inappropriate foods - many of them are 2/3 corn. Cats need meat protein for their diet. Quality canned food will clear up the problem. Try Natural Balance, Blue, Eagle Pack, Lick Your Chops, Felidae, By Nature Organic etc. for a month and I will wager you will not have hairballs. Don't use any food that has by-product meat - read the label!

All cats groom themselves and their natural diet of meat protein allows them to digest the hair and rid their system of it. When you throw in a lot of indigestible food such as corn the cat's digestive system can't handle it and that's why cats throw up hairballs. When you give a cat something like laxatone or a "hairball" food you are just treating a symptom and not solving the real problem which is the overload on the cat's digestive system.

Really cats get hairballs, all cats do. Its the down side of self cleaning. You can get them specialized diets that increase lubrication inside of the stomach and intestines so the cat poops it better. Also something on the market called Petromalt. Its a flavored Lubricate that most cats will eat as a treat and it greases the digestion tract so it comes out the other end rather than be hacked up on your floor. Downside to these manufactured lubrications.... greasy poop and anal discharge... maybe some "chocolate" stains on your ivory couch hehehe. You cant get rid of hairballs, you just got to get sneaker than them. Grooming your cat more often with a wire brush and rubbing them down with a wetten towel will help with the hair they ingest.

My cat gets them too! I use Iams Hairball Rememdy Food. I used to try that oitment that you put on them and they lick, but my cat hated it and would throw it around the house (off her paw).

Try finding food with Hairball Remedy. It works great!

There are over the counter hair ball remedies that are suggested. One I tried is called Laxatone, it comes in beef or fish flavor. My cat does not take it too well though so I tried using a small dab of non-dairy spread, such as Country Crock. Dairy will most likely upset his little tummy so never use butter. One big thing is to keep his/her coat well brushed. This cuts down on the amount of hair that ends up in his throat. Check with your vet if the problem persists. And if your cat has any health issues you should check before using any of these solutions.

I give my cats Hairball Rememdy once a week. It helps their stomachs too. You put it on their paw and they lick it off. Dr. Fosters and Smith is a good site.

my cats get hairballs ALL of the time, well they used to. what I did was buy special food that is supposed to prevent hairballs, brush them everyday or everyother day (even if you only brush her/him for 2 minutes, its still worth it), and another possible thing would be to get special medication - ask your local vet
