I understand and I applaud your decision to do this without drugs. The following steps are part of a program for just such an issue.

1. Lay off the caffeine!! You may have to do this on a gradient so you don't go through caffeine withdrawal. Come off it over a 2 week period. Substitute decaf, herbal tea, non caffeinated soft drinks and avoid chocolate

2. Lay off all alcoholic beverages if you use them, at least until these symptoms have subsided

You'd be surprised how much calmer you'll feel once you get all these drugs out of your system.

4. Exercise daily...walk, bike, whatever you like

5. Take vitamins and lay off the junk food.

5.Some people think yoga is too weird but the fact of the matter is that people who practice yoga are very calm individuals. Try Yoga!

6. For 2 whole weeks...

STOP reading the newspaper and watching TV (especially the news) and avoid internet news. Much anxiety is caused by the fearful nature of media reporting and there's not a whole lot one can do about any of it. Believe me, you'll know what's going on by talking to your friends. Try it!

Avoid intense movies (sci-fi, murder mysteries, scary movies) You may think you can handle them but maybe not. Give it a try.
Watch comedies, drama, pleasant stuff, you know?

Very important! Avoid those people in your life who give you grief, to the extent that you can. Spend more time with people you like. **This is really important. **

Good Luck. Hope this works for you.

You could consider to go and see a therapist, if you are afraid of the Drs, therapists do not prescribe meds, but maybe they can be an outlet to find out what is causing your anxiety. A good vitamin B complex is also safe to take and it will give your frayed nerves the nourishment they require. Rescue Remedy from Bach is also good.
Try taking some walks, when you feel a panic attack take a deep breath, do something with your hands, like crosstich, get a relaxation tape and listen to it, in the beginning you will find that they are hard to follow, but eventually you will prevail, if you are in a stressful situation figure out the way to deal with it, again talk to someone qualified, some Drs are not very gung ho for a lot of meds. Good Luck

I too have problems with anxiety. Some things that I do to help me that don't involve meds are... Deep controlled breathing ie breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds then out for 7 seconds. Something else that helps while doing this is to find a quiet place with no tv or radio on. Possibly put on some soft music, something that relaxes you. Close your eyes and focus on a happy event or perhaps a place you would like to go to.

Other things that can help are to keep a journal. Write in it when you are feeling tense and anxious. Writing down what makes you feel anxious about can help give you control over a situation that perhaps you are not feeling control over.

You can also find free counseling. I know my community college offers it. There are free places available if money is a problem.

Hope this helps.

I suffer from anxiety too. I have used medication, but it definitely terrible to rely on it for the rest of your life.

I would say trying excercising, keeping your mind busy with activities and try talking to a professional.

I've done the first two and they are great ways to keep you sane. And will be going to see a therapist soon.

good luck!

Yes! Move to a Greek Island. I did this 3 years ago and have never felt better in my life.

My heart goes out to you. I know what u r feeling. I have tried everything it seems, but what seems to help the most is St. Johns Wort , exercise, and some prescription meds. I know that u don't want to be on pills the rest of your life but u should at least take the time to talk to a professional u feel u can trust.

I don't see anything in your post that says you have been going to therapy. Nothing......why is that? Therapy/counseling is the ONLY thing that is going to help you get rid of your anxiety. Medication is only supposed to take the edge off your symptoms while you learn why you feel this way. And the only way to do that is with help. Whether you take medication or not, the problem is still going to be there and that's the reason you feel this way. Until you get help you will remain miserable.

I have had anxiety problems as well, aprtcularly when between jobs, and nothing has ever helped me as much as exercise.

James Taylor said the same thing, that exercise and the natural high it gives you is the only thing that cured his depression, which was causing him to be violent and suicidal.
