Same as an ex-catholic. The connotation being given is that you have to "recover" from it, like alcohol or drug addiction. The guilt, etc...

Someone who was raised a Catholic and no longer a Catholic. But since Catholicism runs so deep with culture and lifestyle, the "recovering Catholic" is a clever take on the term "recovering alcoholic" or whatnot.

Ha! Ha! Someone that has come to their senses! Hahaha! That's great. Sorry, I don't know the real answer, but it baffles me that there's not more recovering Catholics in the world.

a person who used to be a strict adherent to the catholic church and its archaic practices and beliefs...generally someone who was forced into catholic school as a child, escaped to the real world and realized the truth about living in the US....someone who has turned their back on the church because of all the funny business...you know what i'm talkin' about...someone who decided that an unexamined life is not worth living...

Me! Well, I'm pretty much recovered now.

There's another religion which I won't name, whose members (particularly the mothers) are known for laying guilt trips on their kids. Well, they have NOTHING on catholic mothers - they're just as bad!

So anyone leaving the catholic church can have quite the battle on their hands.
