I am in school for a Tax Preperation Certificate and with all the new online software I am wondering if my job will even needed in the near future?

Yes!! I am quality control at a large tax prep. office and their are plenty of customers and many come back year after year because of the paper trail and the fact that their taxes are guanteed. Many people just get to nervous about doing taxes and with the divorce rate and tax law changes conserning this and other issues.

If anything the TP Offices will have to up the benefits of paying someone to do their taxes....

Also, Tax preparers will probably qualify to be help desk support for these on-line software companies.

In the near future - absolutely! Because people are still nervous about doing their taxes themselves.
I think if people spent a little more time they could all be able to do their own. Then again, some people will pay you for the convenience of not having to do it themselves.

CPA's will definitely be needed, to interpret tax law. As to a tax prep certificate, that probably depends on how detailed and rigorous the course is.
