Does the temperature change due to global warming merely increase the overal temperature, or does it cause greater extremes, such as in the desert (hot as hell during the day, freezing at night)?

what would the climate become on an average day in america? hot days with cold nights, and more frequent rains?

The effects of global warming do not seem to be occurring evenly. Some areas of the world might even get cooler, and temperature change can have surprising, almost counter-intuitive effects. For example, the Rocky Mountains experienced heavier than normal snows earlier this winter because warm temperatures allowed moisture that would have fallen closer to the coast to move further inland (source NOAA). In general, the higher latitudes are warming at a much faster rate than the rest of the planet.

The consensus thought is that climate zones will move to higher latitudes, however the truth of the matter is that human knowledge is lacking as the world is going into unknown territory. Many scientists are trying to model the future, and not all of their models agree, and it seems that new information changes the models on a fairly frequent basis. You can help by using your computer for processing the calculations at climateprediction.net. I do!

The best site I've seen for non-scientists to get information on global warming, including what we know and what we don't know, is at the BBC. They don't pull any punches on the seriousness of the matter. The link is below.

By the way, Greenland is getting green again. I recently read an article about how the potato farmers there think global warming is great!

Global warming is at the fore front because politicians found how to use a new platform to get re-elected. The world leadersuse it because they found ways to make money at it. This is a made up problem just like Global Cooling in the 1970's. Wake up people. I agree we need to be more efficient with our resources, and we should fine and jail companies who are dumping into our rivers maliciously. I want to stop the raiforest destruction, but to say that global warming is a serious man made issue and we need to destroy the American economy and bow down to the rest of the world certainly does not float my boat. Follow the money on this one and you will see that it is all for political gain and grant money for those scientists who profit off of the government if global warming stays at the front of the issues. Look deep into the Keoto (sp?) Treaty, first of all they took jets to a non-central resort location. Not very environmentally concious. THen in the parameters of the treaty they have a clause that makes it so you can buy or sell polution credits. This is all about shifting wealth and breaking down the United States. This is painfully obvious, just look at peoples agenda. The earth's mean temperature has risen .6 degrees C in the past 125 years. Greenland's icecaps have gotten colder in the past 10 years. The Scientists who do not gain anything on their posisition will tell you that the earth has a natural progression and this is what we are seeing. The UN report is made up of POLITICIANS not a good spread of scientists. THere are as many or more scientists who believe that man in NOT the reason and it is over hyped, but their voice is not heard in the LIberal Mainstream Media. This issue is 99% political, and an attempt to make the USA a socialist nation, and eventually communisim. WAKE UP AMERICA, IT IS TIME TO BE AMERICANS. FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE. STOP THE LIES

It is average world wide temperatures they refer to, but they lie when they say it is hotter now than ever. When it was first discovered, the earth was warm enough that so many plants were growing on Greenland that they called it "Greenland". Now it's all white because it's frozen. When the earth gets warm enough for Greenland to get green again then we will be back to being as warm as we were before the first factory put out the first molecule of CO2. The global warming alarmists are lying and even remove data from temperature charts so that their lies will look better. Don't believe them, and stop worrying about a "problem" that does not exist.

No....The term global warming is a specific example of the broader term climate change, which can also refer to global cooling. In principle, global warming is neutral as to the period or causes, but in common usage the term generally refers to recent warming and implies a human influence. The UNFCCC uses the term "climate change" for human-caused change, and "climate variability" for other changes. Some organizations use the term "anthropogenic climate change" for human-induced changes

Greater extremes, but over longer times and distances. Some places will actually likely get colder.

The diurnal (day/night) variation will stay about the same.

global warming presumably causes climate shift to different areas because it upsets the earths normal cooling and heating current flows ...

your desset comment is on the ball
here are some more general details and posible solutions

in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification

in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days

in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)

,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.

collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,

as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss

each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,

and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.

Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

recicling wastes,limit water use
