rink skating is much more consistant, as far as ice structure. Plus you can't fall through. It's safe, and has warm areas.
Pond skating is so "Norman Rockwell", we all must do it sometimes! But you never know what the ice will be like...

I'd say rinks are better, because they have very smooth ice and are brightly lit. When ponds freeze over, the ice surface tends to be bumpy and uneven. If you skate on a frozen pond, you will ruin your blades. Also, there is always the danger of falling through the ice.
But, I can understand that it is convenient to go pond skating, seeing that you don't have to pay to skate on it. It is also easier to get to than an indoor rink if it is in your own backyard.
If you want to have an outdoor rink in your backyard, you can order a special one from a company. They give you a kit and instructions on how to construct the rink. It comes with specially made supporters, so you can build a rink on a slope. It also comes with a mini-Zamboni, so you can keep the ice extra-smooth.

Pond ice can be terrible. There are ruts, bumps, branches... I don't do any "real" skating when I'm skating on a pond, and I always wear my old skates - not my new ones that I use for real practice and tests.
That said, my old town had a pond where they groomed the ice. The ice was actually pretty decent.
When I skate on ponds, I try to stick to "established" skating areas - where other people are also skating. I don't want to be off on my own and fall through!
Pond skating is fun, but it can be murder on your blades. If you also skate on rinks, be sure to get them sharpened once you come off the pond ice.
I love skating in rinks instead of ponds, because the ice surface is decent. There are actually some outdoor rinks near where I live, so I can get that outdoor/pond environment, without the bad pond ice.
But I always try to skate at least once per season on my local pond, if only for the fun of it.

Pond skating can be rough depending on th surface. If you are starting out in skating start on smooth flat ice found at your local rink. Small bumps and ridges in pond ice can be trecherous for new skaters. Your knees will thank you. After you get the hang of thing head out to the pond or lake. If you live near Ottawa Ontario Canada the world's largest skating rink is open for the season. 16 Klm of ice. not to mention the winter festival called Winterlude

When I was little I used to skate on a cranberry bog near my house. It was only a foot or two deep, and the ice was usually great minus the few bumps. (Up North brings great winters.)
Plus if you can't stop just keep going off into the snow beside the ice. In a rink, you will just hit the wall. On the bright side, that ice is smoothed several times a day, no or few bumps. (But many holes because of the figure skaters jumping. I tripped in one before.)

pond hockey can cause more injury to knees and ankles due to the uneven service of the ice. Pond hockey is fun no rules (unless you agree upon them) Rink hockey is controled and organized

While pond skating looks fun it totally destroys your blades. Don't do it unless you have back up skates that you can use.
