Ok, this is going to seem pretty stupid and trivial.... But I need advice.

Last Fall I became interested in acting and asked to sign up for lessons at a local theater. My mom said yes and we paid the first half of the fee. Well, the theater suddenly decided to put the class off until February of 2007... Needless to say, that is now and I have realized that I have no interest in acting whatsoever. I received a call from the theater today saying that classes started last night. I really, really, really don't want to attend this class. I have no interest and I'll hate every second. Furthermore, I just had my wisdom teeth removed and am in a lot of pain. I don't want to take this class (I would have taken it back in the Fall however, but a lot has happened since then). How is the best way to explain to my mother that I don't want to take this class? She's only paid for half of it. Thanks for any advice. I feel really bad about this, but I have too much on my plate right now.

That is a bit of a pickle. You could have her talk to the sponsoring parties about refunding your money. She can tell them that your schedule at this time does not allow for you to take the class, which is why you signed up for the time that you did.

Honestly, though, I think you should take the class. Not because you want to become a great actor or something, but because an acting class can benefit so many other areas of your life. From strengthening public speaking skills, to making contacts, to gaining confidence and skills that can help you in ANY area of your life, acting classes can be really beneficial. Don't do it for the "acting", per se. Do it for the life experience.

Well my question to you is this...What was the agreement when your mum paid for the acting classes? Can you cancel and still receive the first half that you've already paid?

I think you ought to talk to the director of the local theatre and explain your situation -- that you have no interest in acting whatsoever, that you paid for classes starting in the fall of 2006, and that you would like a refund of your money as you have not attended any classes.

Most local theatres will be more flexible, but you really don't know until you ask. Go with your mum and talk about it, you ought to be able to figure it out.

As for your mum, I am sure she will be a little disappointed in your decision, but I'm sure she already knows how you feel. I think that it would be best if you were direct and straightforward with your mum. It will help you out in the end.

Normally if a theater or any other place organises classes and puts them off that long, I'd say you should be able to get your money back. It's also weird they only called you to say classes started *last* night! You paid them for services you'd expected in fall, not now.

my first advice would be to give it a try, alternatively you will have to come clean to your mom and let her know how you are feeling she will know the avenues to go down to get her money back,, maybe they have a waiting list of people hoping to join that class and you can get your money back? have you any friends who would like to take your place instead? I'm sure that between you both you can come to a resolution. good luck!

Tell your mother how you feel. If you're old enough, get a job and pay her back the money she invested if she's not able to get a refund of the tuition.

This might be something you would really enjoy. At least give it a try. Maybe re-prioritizing your plate would help.

Tell her what you told us. Be honest and sincere, and she'll understand.
