Money is always good, especially cash, that way she can get the things she knows she needs. Also, they have little money when they are in the Peace Corps and a little extra may come in handy.

Get them something practical that they can use, Go to a camping store, get them some wash cloth's,or the fancy towels that dry fast since they don't weigh a lot and are easy to wash. Maybe a flashlight or some other type of neat thing that they can use. Good luck!

When I went overseas, I was able to find clothing cheap in the markets and towels. Things that were difficult to find were pocketknives, shoes, and socks. (I had difficulty finding lingerie but that depends on how close you are to your niece.)

Oddly enough, the thing that I most found myself wanting? -- it was one of those hard plastic egg crates that you find in camping stores. Since I had to butcher my own meat (or scale and de-head my own fish) I found that most of my protein came from eggs. They keep for a long time when stored out of the sunlight, and they're versatile. When I had a neighbor with chickens I didn't have to take them far, but when she didn't have them anymore (drought caused slaughter of much livestock) I had to buy them from town. A long trip on the bus was bad for breaking eggs...

Just my best suggestion. People think of solar chargers, batteries, knives etc; but that is the one thing my family couldn't seem to understand. She'll thank you for it!

Several people gave me small things when I went. I'd suggest either the Swiss Army Knife that they call the "Camper" - it has the standrd useful blades plus a small saw - or one of those flashlights that doesn't use batteries. They have some you crank and some you shake.

It is an amazing place, and one of the centers of AIDS. Check William Campbell Douglas' web site. He spends a lot of time there at a clinic.

Money would be nice, or a phone card that she can use anywhere to call home.

What about stationary and stamps so she could write when she wanted to.
