I'm going to China for two weeks in May. I'm going to be in Bejing, Shanghai, Xian, and Suzhou. I expect to see part of the "great wall" and the "tera cotta warriors".

Any one know of something that would not be a normal part of a tour?

My favorite place in Beijing is Yonghegong (Lama Temple). It is just as beautiful, if not more so, than the more well known temples, and draws fewer crowds. You should also visit Panjiayuan, the main antique market. If possible, go to the Simatai section of the Great Wall instead of Badaling (way too crowded). I also recommend taking a hutong tour.

Shanghai is a great city to simply wander around. Check out the French Concession and Xintiandi. Also be sure to walk Nanjing Lu. Don't leave without eating xiaolongbao (soup dumplings).

In Xian, I recommend renting a bike for a few hours. (Pretty easy to find a rental place). It is nice to bike around the walls of the city. Also, visit the Mosque. Amazing.

Welcome to China-my home country and Beijing - my hometown!

In Beijing, Hutong Tour is definitely a highlight! That is where you will take the rickshaw go deep into the heart of old Beijing and wandering around the narrow alleys - which is called Hutong! You will be amazed by the life style and traditional architecture from this face-to-face experience!

I will have a special recommendation for Xi'an other than Terra Cotta Warriors. It is Yangling Tomb which is the first excavated Emperor's Tomb by the government. This newly opened Yangling Museum of the Han Dynasty and its antique preserving hall, where you can see a real excavation site. This excavation just started in March 2006. You will be able to see the excavation in progress through the glass roof!

In Shanghai, I will recommend Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town several thousand years old filled with historical sites like old rice and oil stores, and ancient bridges. You will see many ancient buildings standing on both sides of the canals with more than 30 old bridges adding to the beauty of this ancient prosperous town. It is like a little Venice. Don't miss the boat ride on the canal where you can have some intimacy with this old town.

In Suzhou, my recommendation is:Shantang Street, “the First Street” in Suzhou! Shantang Street is at the foothills of Tiger Hill. It was built by the famous poet Baijuyi in Tang Dynasty, has over 1200 years of history! The street meanders along the canals, which is the best preserved look of old Suzhou! Truly a signature-look of ancient Suzhou!

Of course, there are so many recommendations that I can give depends on where your interest lands. As the owner of JIA's Dream Tours, I would be more than happy to help you! Because we specialize in custom tours to China.

In Xi'an, don't miss the Tang Dynasty Show; you can see it with or without dinner. Either way, it's worth the expense. Very lavish production. Also just outside Xi'an is the Huaqingchi, or Flower Pure Pool, former spa of the Tang emperors. Very pretty.
