"Dress hot" is not appropriate for a wedding, and not very much help from your friend. You should not be taking attention away from a bride.
If the wedding is during the day, you can wear a knee-length dress or [skirt with a top] that is dressy enough to wear to church, or work if you were having an interview.
If the wedding is in the evening, you would want to go with something more floor-length.
There is nothing wrong with a formal or very nice pantsuit or skirt/jacket combo. This is especially true for the rehearsal stuff, which can be completely informal. I am officially sticking my tongue out at your date for the "no pants" comment. :o) Many mothers of the bride wear such things.
I would hope you have something already in your wardrobe that fits the bill. If not, just get a nice jacket or top that can go with something you already have. Try not to match the bridemaids in color and style.
Do NOT match him under any circumstances. That's what the bridesmaids are doing, to some degree.

Try to contact a bride's maid and ask her advice and the colors of the wedding and how formal the wedding is going to be. If your guy is wearing a tux, go formal; if he's wearing a business suit, go cocktail dress; if he's wearing a casual suit, wear a conservative date dress.
Try to get a complementary color to the wedding party in case you are in any picture, but I think he's mistaken about this unless it is a very casual wedding. Years from now the bride should be able to know everyone in the wedding party pictures and not wonder who's date you were.

When my husband and I were invited to weddings that he was in before we were married I always dressed formal. Cocktail dress would be fine. Floor length might get in the way. All mine were cocktail. Except one which was one of my own bridesmaid dresses from my wedding that I borrowed to wear to the event. A less formal dress can be worn to the rehearsal dinner or a nice pants suit is totally acceptable but you don't want to wear the same dress for both events.

well, everyone's saying not to dress hot, after he specifically asked you to...
i think a guy's definition of "hot" would be different from a girl's in this situation, so it's confusing. the others are right, don't dress so provocatively that you take away from the bride's spotlight or something, but i think the guy's point is really just "look like cool, relatively sexy, elegant, polished, put together, and basically like an impressive date on my arm." -- like the date of the best man. :D
which means you should look beautiful; after all, in the wedding hierarchy, you're kind of 1 step down from bridesmaid. =)
also, if possible, i would get your hair done professionally, but not anything too dramatic. maybe just add some curl if you have straight hair, or straighten it if it's curly.
overall, you want to shoot for demurely beautiful, yet subtle.
have a great time!

Check out Jessica McClintock website. I would go with a simple halter dress with a nice floral or solid print. Dress it up with a nice clutch and heals. You will be comfortable in the heat and still look hot! There are some really beautiful dresses that would be appropriate for a day or evening look. Have fun and good luck!

Find out the brides contact information and call her, she'll generally know what she wants her wedding party to look like. Don't wear white and don't "dress hot" it's the bride's day, not yours.

Don't dress "hot," it will take away from the bride. It's her day(s), so let her be as much the center of attention as possible. That's the only rule in these situations, usually.

Dont pay attention to those adult adult males. gown eye-catching. Make him proud to be viewed with you in public. it is going to strengthen his ego, whilst different adult adult males are gazing you. and it will enable him think of, "gee, she's getting all eye-catching for me, she ought to like me or something" You dont might desire to gown like this continuously, yet purely instruct him a minimum of the flair you will possibly be able to desire to look eye-catching. Who needs a humdrum woman who attire conservatively continuously?
