Be your own wedding planner it will save you lots of money! What do you want and what do you like? What's your colors and find other colors that would go best with it. Your wedding, your call! Start with your budget, how much you are willing to spend for your special day! Include your dress, decorations, food, church, reception hall, invitation, just about everything you would love to have. Your ideas will make it HAPPEN! Get a portfolio started and work from that, it sounds like alot of work but truly it is not! Write down all your ideas,colors, theme (time of the year;ex. summer,etc.), wedding party, guest, and just anything you can come up with and work it into your budget! Find out everything you need to know by making time to go and check out different places! Family can help prepare food! Some of the wedding party can serve like you T-Girls (ushers)! It is truly easier to be your own planner and take care of things yourself so it can be done right to your taste. I got married Xmas Eve 2006 and I spent about 5,000 in total and it looked as if we spent 50,000+! It was beautiful! I did everything myself!

I've been told that I am a great planner but since we have never met I don't suggest you hire me but I would say that you would be your most inexpensive wedding planner. I planned my whole wedding in one month. You CAN plan your own wedding, it just depends on how much time you have until the big day. I used the internet for all of it. I printed out pictures of flowers, cakes and dresses and showed them to my vendors so they knew exactly what I was looking for, for example, I was able to show several different bakerys the same picture of the cake I wanted so I was sure to get the correct quotes and find the best deal. I have a binder with all my information in it organized by vendor. I keep getting compliments on how organized I am when I meet with vendors. Normally they get a lot of brides who have no idea what they want and it takes forever to come to conclusions. As long as you know what you are looking for and have a specific budget and stay organized your wedding planning will turn out to be a great experience, mine did.

Hey Paulina,
I'm always for doing it myself if possible. Why pay someone to do something you can do yourself?!
A couple things to keep in mind. Be sure to do some planning beforehand ... what you want, what you don't want, what you've always dreamed of, what your fiance might want, etc. Take the time to sit down and write out all these things. It will make the process go much smoother.
Also, enlist the help of friends and family based on their strengths. For example, if your sister's thing is music, put her in charge of working things out in that respect. Tell her what you want, but let her do the legwork. If your dad has a friend who is in the restaurant business, he could be the one to do some research on planning the food for the wedding. You get the idea.
The secret to being a wedding planner (for your wedding or someone else's) is to delegate ... to assign duties to those who can competently handle things for you. Do NOT try to do everything yourself! Just be the motivator to get others to do what they're good at.
Best of luck on your wedding. If you need some other resources or ideas on ways to plan your wedding and keep to a budget, check out the link I've included.

Go to lovegevity.com. They have free wedding planners through their certification program. A good wedding planner will actually save you money rather than cost you more by saving you time and referring you to pre-screened vendors. Many times planners will have professional discounts worked out with vendors because of the referrals that are given.
Lovegevity.com also has a neat board game called "Lovegevity- The Wedding Planning Game" It helps to work out what you would like to have so that you can set your priorities for planning.

Try posting an add on craigslist. A friend of mine listed an add stating that they needed a wedding planner and would not really be able to pay them, but they will invite them to the wedding and they will be avail for future use as a business reference. A women who was going to school for event planning answered the add.

Congratulations to you and your fiance. I am a social sales manager for a reception site in New Jersey. I always send the brides I work with to www.brides.com This site only launched this past fall. It is laid out exceptionally well. Easy to follow and find stuff.
My words of advice;
*Have you picked a date? keep in mind that there are "hot" seasons and "cold" seasons. The cold ones can be just as wonderful and magical as the hot ones...
*keep in mind that a beautiful wedding is not always the most lavish or over the top. As long as it is what you and your fiance want and it tells about who you are, it will be a memorable affair.
Good Luck and Congrats again!

There are so many ideas in bridal magazines these days, plus, theknot.com has a ton of ideas, and a helpful planner and reminder of deadlines. Good Luck, it can get pretty stressful, but just remember what it's all about.

Talk to your fiance and decide what you really want for your wedding... then plan it yourself. Look at the wedding magazines for ideas then do them yourself to save money. Remember this is only one day, the marriage is supposed to be your lifetime.
