Bands of wind caused by earth's rotation. Pretty constant and steady, used by trade ships, thus the name. One in each hemisphere a ways from equator.

The winds follow a pretty constant stream in the atmosphere. The jet stream is the same thing. They called it trade winds because sailing ships would use these winds to speed their travel across the oceans.

They are winds that you can trade. Like if I have a south wind and want a north wind I can trade my south wind for it. They exist because air moves. They originate from air.
