Question about God's punishment of women

I found a website that talks about a verse at Genesis 3:16. In this verse God says to Eve:

"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you."

According to the website, Saint Augustine explained the meaning of this verse as follows:

--- God's words to Eve are an announcement that her disobedience will result in the future punishment of all women. The first part of that punishment is labor pains, which all women must experience whenever they give birth. The second part of the punishment is a requirement that all women submit to the rule of their husbands. ---

But I don't understand why God would punish all other women for something that Eve did. I also don't understand why the punishment is so severe. Can someone please explain this?

Thank you

the bible is just a book of mythology...

people didnt understand things like why women had such a hard time having babies so they explain it through a story.

also, men wrote the bible so of course they're going to write about how men are superior, if it's written in a "holy" book, women have to follow what it says.

Good question...

I make to confirm 2 things before answering the question:
*This isn't requiring women to submit to their husbands as slaves.
*According to the New Testament, the flesh is sin.

The first part of that punishment regarding labor pains was given because when Eve and Adam were with God, they were a family. Eve allowed sin to enter the family of God. From that point on, when a woman brought a new life into this world there will be pain. Looking at it another way, this woman that God brought into the world hurt him. The pain is to serve as a reminder for all women.
>>>Going further, the man's punishment was reflectant off of all that God had given him... a garden were all he had to do was make sure everything was in it's place. After accepting to sin, he had to work hard to make what he has until he died.

Moving on, the second part of the punishment isn't requiring the woman to be ruled by his husband. It is telling her was should be expected to happen. In other (my own) words, "I will allow your husband to rule over you." This was for her leading him into eating the fruit.
****NOTE to Guys: The actual sin was committed when Adam ate of the fruit.

The role of a wife is to be the husband's helper (HelpMate). She is to help him meet the role God has in store for him. That can't happen if she is looked upon as nothing more than a slave. Plus, that makes the union unbalanced, and God is an equal God. You see how everybody (woman, man, serpent) received their punishment all together. The one who started the problem (Satan) also was told of his punishment (Gen. 3:15). His punishment is to come.

What is truly stupid about the above is that Woman wasn't even created when God warned Adam not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil. Also, there is no hint that either God or Man told the woman, Eve, that the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil should not be eaten. Neither is their any warning to the woman about the words of a serpent when she had no knowledge of Good & Evil, so she could not judge the words of the Serpent. Then, God punishes her to a greater extent than Adam.

This situation would not stand the judgement of any jury in the country if put into modern context.

The first thing you have to understand is that God makes the rules... you and I do not... whether or not we understand makes no difference...All the ills that mankind suffers stem from that original sin. of Adam and Eve. They also lost their immortal life in The Garden. and their flesh became mortal. with this came the degrading of the genetic code over the generations. Leading to Birth defects and other genetic disorders... this allowed other illnesses to develope.... All of this, along with the women problems are the reminder that we need God. And if we want to regain a relationship with Him we need to play by His rules.

Yeah, kind of sucks doesn't it? But then again only half of that is true now. The whole woman submitting to men thing is really running low these days in most Western cultures and I know a lot of woman who'd rather jump off a cliff then become a slave to a man, bowing to his every word. Myself included.

the bible was writen by "man"...we live in a male dominant scociety that does not understand women and sees them as "subserviant". Man's desire to concor all, includes women.
So "man" wrote it that way to put the woman in blame and that she is bad, bad bad, and must be punished for not falling at his feet.
