I've been looking at the two and I have about 300 to spend. Though I'm trying not to spend all of it on just the camera. I really want a Canon camera though, but I'm not sure on what to buy to fit my needs.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I also wanted to know if any of you had any other cameras to look at under $300.

Petra has given you a lot of information to help you make your decision, but I'd like to add to her thoughts.

The A630 sensor is about twice the size of the one in the SD600 and the image quality is better in the A630.

The A630 is 8 MP instead of 6 MP, which is minor, but may be a tie-breaker for you.

The lens in the A630 is "bigger" and better and it zooms a bit further.

The A630 uses "AA" batteries, so you will never be stuck in Podunk with dead batteries. If your die, you can go into a drug store, grocery, 7-11 or ANY store just about and buy a new set to get you through the day.

Go to this site and click on "Read Owner Opinions" as well as just comparing the specs.

Go to both of these reviews (many pages) and also look at all of the sample images and decide about the quality for yourself.

About the only thing the SD600 has going for it in this comparison is the size. Cool. It IS a great camera, but unless size matters to you, you will like the A630 much better. My son has an A630 and it's a great camera.

It all depends on your needs. If you want an ultra compact camera with point & shoot simplicity, then the SD600 (6MP) would be the best option.

But, if you are interested in how a camera & photography works and want the option to learn how to adjust the shutter speed and aperture etc...which will allow a little more control of some shooting situations, then the A630 (8MP) would be the better option.

Both cameras have some similar features and also a very good quality movie mode.
Another thing to consider is battery life. The SD600 (due to it's small size), has a rechargeable lithium battery which only allows approx. 160 shots, which is ok if you remember to charge it regularly...and the A630 uses 4 AA sized batteries (rechargeable NiMH, 2500mAh or higher is the best option), which allows approx. 500 shots. You would obviously need to buy the batteries and charger.

The A630's LCD isn't as high res as the SD600's, but it does have the vari-angle (flip out & twist) screen, which is a great idea and very handy in some shooting situations...and protects the LCD when not in use.

You would also need to buy a decent SD memory card for optimum camera performance. 1GB minimum. Something like the Sandisk Extreme III (which is fast and comes with a lifetime warranty).

Good luck with whatever you decide...

If you REALLY REALLY need a slim camera then go with the SD600, but if you want picture quality and do not care about size, the A630 will excell at picture quality by a long shot. Like Alan said, the sensor is larger in the A630 which enables the A630 to have better picture quality than the SD600. The larger the sensor the better the imagine quality.

The SD600 is a good all around small camera if you need a small camera to fit in your pocket and go. The A630 is better in terms of picture quality and has the flip open and close LCD. If imagine quality is a pet peve then the A630 is for you.
