I'm in Rochester NY, and I've been wondering the same thing - WHY? I don't understand the logic behind it. I admit, I've got to go to Wegmans tonight after work to buy milk, but that's only because I forgot to pick it up yesterday. BUT that's not the only reason I'm going to the store. If I didn't have to go there for dinner stuff tonight, I wouldn't bother.
I would think that those people would have learned by now that a snow storm is not the end of the world. If they want to buy something, buy some rock salt - so you don't slip and kill your self going out of the house!
I might pick up a few bottles of wine on the way home though - if we get what they are predicting, I'm not going to come into work tomorrow, so I'll stay at home, and enjoy the day - a good glass of wine, a good book, and some snacks. Sounds like a good snow day to me :)

People are idiots, plain and simple. I enjoy watching the over anxious folk put a run on staples at the grocery stores or schools cancelling even in anticipation of bad weather.
It's pathetic, and cuts down on our productivity.
Actually, the best time to go shopping is during a snow storm. The stores are deserted and most of the idiots are at home wondering why they have a stockpile of bread and milk.

You've never been caught in a White Out before have you?
Last one I remember produce a baby boom 9 months later for the town.
7 days, everything was shut down, no plows able to get through.
Preparation is the key to survival to ANY problems which may occur.
Staples:
Milk for the kiddies. Bread for sandwhiches in case electricity shuts done and no cooking possibilities.
Water they can get from snow.(preferably the white snow)

Winter often means getting snowed in or being left without power.
People stock up on the things that they can use to get through.
I live in Minnesota where winter storm shutdowns are a fact of life. I stock up every fall on salami, cheese and crackers. Also canned tuna. People stock up on milk because it is great for kids and bread for sandwiches.

You crack me up mate! I have such a funny image of people rushing around the shops throwing bread about with maniac expressions on their faces.
Well they are kind of the essentials or basics because if you have other foods then think of all the different things you can make from bread or milk.

I think because u never know how much snow is really coming and u want enough food so u don't have to drive to the store in the bad weather.. that's why i do it.. so i can enjoy the snow and not go shopping in it.
