I have celiac disease for which I need to buy special flours as I can not eat wheat. I heard a portion of this is deductable.

If it's prescribed by a doctor, you might be able to claim some of the cost as a medical expense. But medical expenses can only be deducted for the part that exceeds 7.5% of your income, and you have to itemize to take it.

do you have a "prescription" from a doctor for these special foods? If so, they might be deductible. However, unless you are spending tons of money, it won't make any difference.

It's probably one of those special deductions. Well let me let you in on a little secret if your deductions don't equal the strandard. Forget about it. Go to www.irs.gov and see what they say. It might be hard to nagivate but I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for in that sense.

you have to have a prescription from your doctor that this was life threatening if you did not do this diet. then you need to keep that with your records and send a copy to the IRS.
