Your download should work fine. But if it doesn't work, there are a couple of other things you can do ...
1) Write to Microsoft (look for a contact on their website) and have them send you a CD with the SP2 update on it. It should be free, or at least, very cheap. MS isn't trying to make any money from the SP2 update.
2) If you have a friend who got the CD from Microsoft or downloaded the update and then made a CD, make a copy of the friend's CD and use it to upgrade your computer. Again, since Microsoft isn't trying to make any money from the SP2 update, they won't have a problem with anybody making copies of an SP2 update CD. Good luck!

If you have a genuine win-xp you can download service pack 2 otherwise it doesn't work out any how if your xp is good you are safe and if not some times it doesn't work out your system at all after you update every time you start it gives you that your computer is not genuine and so on well if you have a great problem it is better to install win xp with service pack 2 in it and in all way your file is safe until you formatted your hard drive or if the system is not corrupted or if you don't have a virus so on.

You should download Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the Internet, i don't recommend upgrading to Service Pack 2 as a download, it's very annoying, with the first option, you do it all at once.

Yes, you can download SP2 from microsoft.com for free. Be aware that it can take a couple hours to download and install. (Longer on a dial up connection).

You don't usually need it, but it has security upgrades and a few things certain programs require. It's easy to download. Keep trying!
