LOVE THEM!!!!!
Sorry, i have 2 they are the most fantastic dogs.
They are friendly, gentle good fun, cute, love-able, calm, loyal very intelligent.
Everyone in my neighbourhood know my 2's names and when i walk them, child run to see them, they are great with children by the way.
Neither of them has EVER bitten!
Grooming needs to be done regularly, but that is only downside.
Please e-mail if you want anymore info/ pictures etc.

I think you should do your own research on Lhasas - talk to breeders, attend a dog show and meet owners and breeders alike. I can't believe you'd be turned off a breed this easily if you really liked it. Lhasas and shih tzus have comparable health problems - there's PRA in both breeds, I know shih tzus can have inherited kidney problems in the breed, so you need to research a breeder thoroughly no matter which breed you want.
Both have long, beautiful coats which require care to keep them looking gorgeous. Neither breed looks like much of anything if you're too lazy to groom them and keep them clipped short. Lhasas, unlike shih tzus, tend to have a bit more of a "big dog" temperament because they were once used as guard dogs (only to warn, of course, not to defend).
If you want a lhasa, do your own research by actually meeting dogs and owners live and in person!

You need to do some breed research. Dont ever judge a dog by it's breed- all dogs are individuals. However, some breeds have certain "dispositions" associated with them.
All dogs are great companions...if you go to AKC or ASPCA website, im sure you can find more information about each individual breed. It is going to come down, as i said, to the individual dog, not necessarily its breed.
Lhasa's can be stubborn, and sometimes difficult to train, but there is nothing to say the shih tzu u may pick, may not be even worse! Do your research, and look at the individual dog, not just what kind of dog it is.
PS: Whoever said "get a real dog" needs to "get a life" and get out of the pet forum. :)

I have a 1 year old Shih Tzu male, he is the nicest dog I have ever had! I've had alot of small breeds, but this one tops them all. They are full of character, so funny, easy to train, minimal barking (except with strangers, but that goes after about 5mins of the stranger being around you) they are very loyal and clever, they do need grooming quite often but that's something that I enjoy doing anyways, they don't need that much exercise, they love to play, great natured.
Make sure you start training as early as possible as this will help alot.
Several of my neighbours have them too, and they all get along together and play together, all are nice natured. We are like the Shih Tzu Street.

Sweet little dogs as long as you are SUPER kind to them. My neighbor has had 3 in the past 10 years and all but one of them was adorable. The not so great one was mean because she was kicked around by her previous owner. They are fragile and you shouldnt keep them outside. They cant stand the extreme heat or cold.

I think you need to do an in-depth review of yourself and determine your needs from a dog before you continue efforts researching dogs. You will never solve the problem when you dont understand the challenges within. Seek guidance from yourself before challenging the wisdom of others.

Both breeds can be nasty little biters BUT if you splurge and take them to the proper training you will have a lovely pet, no matter what breed you choose.

I have a schauzer/shih tzu cross and she is lovely - she is affectionate but also quite protective - I would have another dog like her in a flash
if you read up on the shih tzu on any website they will tell you that they love their humans - mine certainly does

I have personally been around both breeds of dogs and I don't like either one. You should check into a Yorkshire Terrier. They are really cute and hairy like the others, but they are more fun. They are more spunky and loving dogs.
